Okay the Wii as far as I can tell has a gimicky controler and a few good games... (I admit here and now I could be wrong)

The PS3 is umm yeah we've all been reading this.

So here's my question. Does the 360 have a chance to dominate the American and European markets?

What is Microsofts chances of winning THIS round of the console wars?

Well, from the looks of things, the 360 has a helluva lot more chance than the PS3. And that's only in America, and possibly Europe. Nintendo practically owns Japan at this point.

The 360 is selling worse than the Playstation 2. Right now. Think about that, for a minute, before you reply.

Yeap that's why I'm looking at just the US and Europe, althought I do wonder if they'll finish as #2 in Japan...

Hell, there was a time when the Gamecube was selling better than the 360 in Japan.

And I'll bet you the PS3's numbers are going to look about the same as the 360's in a year. Both consolese just too expensive and not enough people have HDTVs yet. But sony has pretty much given Microsoft a 2 Christmas head start and the 360 is shrinking's sony's list of exclusives. I think it is going to be very interesting watching the ps3 and 360 duke it out when the prices start dropping

That's actually not all that relevent considering that the PSX sold very well in its end-of-life (especially after being reincarnated as the PSOne). Consumers still see this as the current generation consoles, they haven't kicked into gear on next gen consoles yet. I would compare it to the fact that the Gameboy Advance incarnations still sell extremely well, even with the DS having been released (which isn't selling nearly as well).

When next gen console do get released in earnest (which will happen when development moves away from the PS2, around the time the PS3 is released), consumers will eventually make the shift and whether or not they flock to the X360 or the PS3 is still an open question.

Microsoft has the chance to do extremely well in the US and Europe, no question. With the increase of cost in the PS3 alone, they will probably grab significant market share in these two markets.

In Japan? It would take an act of god.

Sadly, not anymore. At least, not according to Praxis's site.

Especially considering that Nintendo owns about, oh, 73 percent of the entire fucking marketshare in Japan! 70 percent of which comes from the DS lite alone!

I'm not sure what you mean when you say the DS isn't selling "nearly as well." Do you mean it isn't selling nearly as well as the 360? The GBA? Or what? Because all statistics show that the DS is outselling ALL consoles in America and Japan.

Still, even the GBASP and/or the GB Micro are selling better than the 360.

Either way, while Microsoft could grab a significant chunk of US and Europe, it seems right now that Nintendo is slated to kick the crap out of the competition.

BTW, I'm getting all my statistics from hereand here.

This go around, I expect the Wii to be dominate in all markets, followed by the 360 in the US and Europe, and PS3 in Japan. This is just because of the Wii's price, and the fact that most people still haven't switched the HDTV.

Next go around, I expect Microsoft and Nintendo to split the US and the European markets, with MS continuing to target the more mature games and Nintendo holding the kid games and the party/social games. In Japan, Nintendo will still dominate, but MS and Sony (should they make a PS4) will battle it out.

The price of the PS3 is a major issue, as well as the Blu-Ray format. If the next big movie format is going to be HD-DVD rather than Blu-Ray it means that the PS3 might suffer for it. After all, look how UMD doesn't seem to have quite caught on as well as is hoped. At least in the UK it doesn't, maybe in Japan it has.

A home shopping catalogue has an advert for a PS3. Now I know catalogues are typically overpriced anyway, but the version with the 60gb HDD was priced at £550, that's nearly twice the price of an X-Box 360 Premium package.

Actually, I wouldn't write off the 360 just yet. After TGS, sales rocketed up in Japan. If they get some more lisences like Blue Dragon going, they could actually build up a respectable base.

I'd expect the 360 to rule the highend market. I just don't see the PS3 catching up on it's lead or domininating it with it's pricetag.
