Is there a way to capture a video stream (like the ones on youtube) and convert them to a file that you can save on disk?

FRAPS works on any video that pops up in a seperate window. Otherwise you have to nick the raw stream which might or might not be legal depending on where it's form.

Youtube is "easy".

Here is blogpost that has info about more manual way.

If you are using FF, easiest way is to install VideoDownloader Addon, and use it to download .flv (flash video files), and then either use some compatible player (like VLC) or convert it to something better. (SUPER works for me.)

I had some problems with files (if seekbar works, colors are messed) so Frapsing might be more reliable way.

You sure? I thought FRAPS only captured openGL stuff?

Fraps can capture anything video on your screen. I'm lazy and use it to rip DVD clips.
