So we can play the rocket powered chibi catgirl character now? NYAA-NII!

No, no, that game's called Melty Blood. It's a fighting game based on Tsukihime, which is the original visual novel game that started the whole thing.

(And besides, why would you need translation to play a no-brainer 2D fighting game? :P )

Fixed. ;)

Mirrormoon, the people who translated the thing, must've been expecting you, because they've included a version that removes all the adult content from the game and still lets you play. :P

Ah ha, so I'm right: "visual novel game" = PORNO game. No exceptions. :P

Ehem.

*points to Clannad*

Of course, you probably have no idea what Clannad is, but it's another visual novel game. No adult content. Period.

Hah, shows you: I have actually heard of it (though I really didn't know anything about it). :P

Still, the genre can't escape the stigma. ;)

Yes, that's one of the terms for it.

Isn't Phoenix Wright styled in the format of a visual novel?

It's a goddamned adventure game, you putz.

A visual novel is just that. A visual novel. Which can also be adventure-oriented, hence an adventure game.

Utawarerumono is an adventure visual novel.

There's this one game that's even more like an adventure game, with levelling and RPG dungeon gameplay, sort of like....emmm.... Fallout, I guess (I've never played Fallout, so I'm just guessing). But it's a visual novel. With an RPG gameplay aspect.

The term visual novel just covers too large of a spectrum.

Phoenix Wright is not a visual novel god damn it. Those things aren't any more interactive than a Choose Your Own Adventure.

Quit tryin' to make your little porno games sound more important than they are, Space Cadet. :P

Phoenix Write is an adventure game, not a visual novel. You might as well try to say that Trauma Center is also a visual novel rather than a medical sim.

I'm not the guy who's missing out, so I'm not particularly offended. :p

EDIT: Anyway, back on topic. The translation works beautifully. Ah, finally in glorious, understandable English!! This was a game that you couldn't even machine translate with any good results, thanks to all the Kanji and the writer's flowery writing style. Kudos to Mirrormoon for two years of hard work!

Ok, how about Higurashi no Naku Koro ni? Definitely a visual novel. AFAIK, not porno.

Whatever, just as long as you're not the desperate type to try and pin an ovbious adventure game like Phoenix Write as one.

Definetly not porno.

Planetarian's the same.

Read about Phoenix Wright a little bit.

Conclusion: definetly a visual novel. :) Even the screenshots have the classic <Name - Text> format. Hard to get more visual novel than that. :P

If interactivity is your category for determing how un-visual novel something is, then Prism Ark, that Fallout-style RPG game I mentioned, and Utawarerumono are all much more interactive than Phoenix Wright, and they're all considered visual novels.

I really can't argue too much detail for PW, because of the fact that I haven't played it, but from what I understand, the game is essentially broken into several seperate cases, which function as missions rather than being a full continuous story as in a visual novel, which I refuse to accept PW being called.

Many adventure games, a genre going back more than twenty years, also have such "Name - text" formats of presentations.

Frankly, I think you need to step out of your little bubble more often, Space Cadet, and see things outside of your small range of experience for once.

Own and beat Phoenix Wright completely.

Conclusion: Shut the fuck up, space cadet.

Hey now, we're talking about visual novels here.

Maybe my bubble of experience is much smaller than yours. But right now, you're in my bubble, and it may be small, but it's still mines.
Conclusion: Shut the fuck up, space cadet.
Okay, so you say Phoenix Wright isn't a visual novel, but you have never played any of the typical visual novels, so I would say that you lack the experience to make that kind of comparison. Afterall, you cannot compare when you don't know what you're comparing against.

EDIT: But this is really going off-topic. But it really is your fault, Spanky, for making this kind of reaction every time I post something about any of these games. But I'm sure you're not doing this out of some sort of vendetta against me or anything like that. Right?

So don't compare Phoenix Wright if you haven't played it. :P

Yeah, yeah, I did the comparison first but oh fuck that. I don't care. I hate it how every visual novel-based thread I make gets derailed by people coming in and kicking at it.

It'd be nice if there were a usergroup for this kind of stuff so I don't have to put up with the rest of you guys.
