Seeking good date management software

Now, the topic may seem a little weird, but please, hear me.

Lately, I have been looking for a simple, free program that would remind me of things. The functionality I need isn't complicated: All it needs to do is show notes I enter into it at the designated time, but here's the little caveat: It needs to show them discreectly and in the background (say, by way of blinking icon). I've been using Date Manager, but it's annoying since it pastes the note right there in the middle of the screen, interrupting the work I'm doing right now.

After a month of trying to find something adequate, I decided to post the question here. Maybe I'm desperate, but folks on SD.net can solve many unusual problems :)

Yeah, but there is a slight problem with that.
It comes with Office. And office costs a shitload of money. Hence why the whole "free" bit :)
