Personal Gears of War impressions (I also need help)

I got my copy of Gears yesterday, and it's everything I expected, and more. The single player rocks, and to my absolute surprise, the multi-player is a hell of a lot more fun than I thought. The individual animations are beautiful, and animation 'combos' are nothing short of amazing. Graphically, the game is just as sexy as I knew it was going to be, but it is better in some parts than in others. Water is beautiful; the characters are amazing; and the overall enviornments are REALLY amazing! It's almost surreal at times - it literally looks like you're playing a movie. One feature I think is really cool is that after a little while, if you aren't shooting, reloading, or doing something with your weapons, your HUD goes away, and you're just left with a movie-like experience. It's a cool little feature.

Having said all that, there are things I dislike about the game: at first, it took me almost an hour to get a solid feel for the controls, and it wasn't until earlier today that I really started to movie gracefully through the game. But once I started to get a feel for it, it was like second nature.

There are only three types of online game modes, and while they are all fun, it would be nice if there were some objective based games in there too (other than just last man standing, kill the oponents leader, and kill only through an assasination). Epic has stated several times that they are not only working on new maps, but new games modes too. I'd bet they the maps and game-types will come out just when what is being played now, starts to get a little old.

The dialogue in the campaign isn't great either. It's kind of lame, to be blunt. I do like the 'feel' of the squad though. By the end of Act I, you really feel like you're in this tight-knit squad, who are always at each other's throats.

Speaking of Act I, that's where I'm stuck. I can't kill the Brumak for the life of me. I can get through the first smashable door, but after that, everything goes down hill. I'd greatly appreciate someone jumping on 'live' to help me through it. My gamertag is: TooMuchButtHair. Or, you can just leave a help-ful tip here. I'm afraid to go searching around the net for help, because if I do, I know I'll run into some serious spoilers.

You mean the Berserker? Move quietly, avoid her when she charges. You'll come across some breakable doors. Lure her into bull charging them and smashing them open. When she does that run through. Repeat until you get her outside.

Lose her via quiet movement once you get her outside then zot her with the hammer of dawn. Once the hammer's finished firing and she's turned red nail her with everything you've got until she cools down, then zap her with the hammer again. Repeat.

Oh and I'd like to add for Gears of War I forked out the cash for the 360 to AVG cable since I don't have an HDtv. It looks fucking GORGEOUS.

Thanks for your help - I'll give it a try first thing in the morning; and yes, it does look absolutely amazing.

You've just gotta be careful because if the Berserker gets too close she'll smell you and you'll have to be quick on the dive.

Game is gorgeous and multi-player is actually fun and useful(having a partner do shit like luring the Berzerker around is very nice, let alone having another pair of eyes at 1 AM in the Night stage).

Sylas has it pretty much right, just remember you can quick roll and time it when the beastie is charging you.

That part was awesome. My buddy chris and I standing by the door firing some rounds so she'll hear us. Then it's:
"Wait for it."
"Wait for it."
"Ok..... NOW!"

and we both dive different directions while she smashes down the doors. We managed to take her out just taking turns dropping the hammer once we got her outside.

The best part was chris getting stuck behind and running towards me. He then looks at my screen and sees that she's charging right behind him and him screaming like a little girl.

Well I got past the Beserker without a problem, but now I'm stuck in Act II - the part where you get the 'car' from the gas station, and you've got to go back to get Cole and Baird. I can't figure out when to stop and use the light, and when to just make a run for it. Should I focus on just getting of the freeway first, without using the light, and then use it as needed, or should I use it as soon as someone calls out an enemy? Right now, I loose more than half my life before I get off the freeway...

Oh I've gotten farther in the campaign. The entire 'Lethal Dusk' segment is fan-fucking-tastic.

The bit in question occurs when night falls and swarms of thousands of little ravenous flying piranha called Kryll come boiling up from out of the ground. Our intrepid heroes are making their way through a bombed out city with the aid of groups of 'stranded', humans who didn't make it out of the cities before they got hit from orbit and gassed. It's a miracle anyone lived but there are a few. Your ultimate objective is a car owned by one stranded that'll let you traverse the distance to where you have to place the super resonator thingy that'll map all the locust tunnels so the humans can nuke the shit out of the heart of their civilization.

Anyway it's the same sort of shooting action from the daylight missions but now with the added twist of trying desperately to find the cover you need while not stepping out of the light from burning cars or detonating propane tanks, or even some of the few streetlights still operational, because if you're out of the light for more than a second or two or Kryll will come swarming down in a storm of fluttering wings and shrieking creatures before you get ripped to pieces.

There's some wonderful scripted moments to like one section where you're pushing a burning, abandoned car forward as mobile cover, and the manhole you're passing by bursts open and kryll come swarming out. There's also some wonderful non-scripted moments like where I flushed a pair of locust from cover with a frag grenade and they moved out of cover to escape the blast... right into the waiting darkness. Next thing I know there are a shitload of fluttering black shapes diving behind the building one of them ran behind an an arm and a few less identifiable bits come flying out.
