BF2 Special Forces

So I installed BF2 and the expansion pack yesterday (my brother had them).
I noticed in the expansion pack you could play as Russian Spetsnaz, so I fired it up.
Is this expansion pack a ripoff? Because the guns etc of the Spetsnaz are identical to those of the MEC.
(Also, pet gripe- it's fucking PYa, not "MR-444").
Or are there all these extra weapons and shit you have to unlock through ranked play?

Pretty much ignore Special Forces. Installing the add-on gives you 2nd tier unlocks, but these unlocks are only usable in vanilla BF2. Special Forces provides 5 new unlocks and when fully patched an additional 2 unlocks. It also provides 3 new weapons just for Special Forces which are only usable on certain maps.
SCAR-H for Assault class Navy SEALs
G36K for Spec Forces for SAS
RPG-7 for Anti-Tank for Insurgents.
All your Tier-1 unlocks (base BF2 unlock weapons) are usable in Special Forces. All Special Forces weapons originaly released are usable as normal kits for certain forces in Special Forces.
SCAR-L Spec Forces for SEALs
F2000 Assault for SAS
MP7 for Engineer for SAS
MG36 for Support for SAS
G36E for Medic for SAS
MEC Special Forces and Spetsnaz use the stock MEC kits from BF2. Insurgents are nearly identical, except they get the RPG7 (dumb fire) instead of the tracking missile. SEALs get standard US but they have two special weapons. SAS has 6 uniques, 5 of them unlocks and only uses the Sniper standard.
While the Special Forces unlocks can be used in vanilla BF2, none of the Special Forces vehicles make it into BF2. Since all the Special Forces unlocks show up in Special Forces, you can demo them before unlocking them.
Now, Special Forces does something very nice for you. For every rank that gives you a weapon unlock, Special Forces being detected means you now get two unlocks.
Everyone has their own set of preferences, but I have an unlock I must strongly advise you get first before all else. The DAO-12 for the Anti-tank kit. Anti-tank is a necessity of playing BF2. Its the best means to killing armor. However, the base weapons aren't that great. The DA0-12 is a 12 shot semi-automatic shotgun. Incredibly powerful close range weapon.

Cool- Special Forces patched up my vanilla BF2 to 1.1 but I didn't have time to patch up to the current version past that last night- if all goes as planned tonight, I'll be playing my first MP games so I can get some practice in.
Where's the best place to patch from anyway?

Ask Chris. There is some local website in Australia that I get better connections from across the ocean then I get in America. He knows what I am talking about.

I loved Special Forces, if only because the maps are better.

I didn't really like SF much, particularly the way the SF attack helo's TV missles seem to be pointed 45 degrees down instead of straight forward.

I'm looking on the EA's BF2 website, there's several options- assuming 1.4 is the latest, it seems as though considerng my version (v 1.1) I have to download the full 530mb patch? Ouch.

Go to Game Arenas Ausgamers website for patches, their links in Sydney are right off the Telstra backbone. So if you have Optus or Telstra, you get right in.

Heh, Game Arena, of course. Where I get all my demos from. And since I'm Telstra, I get insanely fast speed.
530MB though. Fark.

I'm a big fan of the zip line, esp. on Maps like Surge where you've got a fairly central tower that you can zipline to like half the CPs on the map from, nothing beats ziplining into the middle of an enemy CP and blowign them away before they even realize your there

No, nothing beats seeing some helpless smuck ziplining towards you. You don't get an easier target that that!

Hehe, Alyeska and me played Warlord one time and we had taken the hotel station. I put a claymore on the balcony and then revelled in watching some poor sucker zipline right in front of it.
The trouble with SF is that a lot of the coding doesn't seem to have improved with patches, it's still a lot more jerky than vanilla BF2. Granted I'm running on a minimal system but still..
Decent maps though are....
Warlord, though it can be claymore alley at the palace. Beware of server admins enforcing stupid rules like no clays/c4 near flags. And by 'near' that sometimes means not even anywhere in the building.
Ghost Town. A fun little map.
Night Flight, but unfortunately I don't see this map on rotation much.

Duh, that why you're sniper class, shoot everyone first, zipline in and lay claymores.
Of course, plinking zippers is also fun

I like laying ziplines for people to use and then pick it up while they are on it. Instant death

I've done that a few times, but I can't remember, do you get a kill for that?

I think points are irrelevant when set against the massive personal satisfaction you'd get from such a kill.

Apparently. I've been killed by a zipline and I know the darts aren't lethal. So it must be yanking it out from under them that does it.

Oh, and if you just want the unlocks without the rest of the game, it's reasonably simple.
1) Find friend with BF2:SF
2) Play a round logged on his computer as yourself.
3) Go home, log on, and bam. 5 unlocks for no work at all.
