New games don't work

Games like FEAR won't seem to work on this computer. It has a 3 GHz processor, 1 Gb of RAM, and a GeForce 7600 GT.
Windows SP 2
I just double click the icon, and it comes up with the error report window.

Write down the error message and either post it here or put it in to Google. Chances are good you're not the first one this has happened to. Also, make sure all of your graphics and audio drivers are as up to date as you can manage.

Thanks to google translation, it appears that the problem has something to do with an update microsoft made to kernel32.dll.
The translation wasn't without problems, but from what I can gather, here's what you need to do:
Go to the control panel, open add/remove programs, select "show updates", and then remove KB917422 (a windows security update). Restart, and it should work.
That's what they said, anyway.
