Am I alone? Unimpressed w/all next-gen consoles
Cause the games are only now trickling through. The high 8 rated and 9's.
Let me also para-phrase this by noting my tastes are fairly narrow and that my beef is with games 1st and foremost.
I love mech-games like Zoe 2, Zeonic Front, the one great Gundam game [for a Gundam game], Ring of Red. I love the Ace Combat franchise. I loved the Soul Calibur's and with an online component would play the shit out of that game. I'm still very patiently awaiting a decent naval combat game on any franchise and enjoyed Warship Gunner, it was a little flat at times, but it had something that could be expanded on. Stuff like that, with a slant on combat, co-op, and head-to-head.
Finally: at the end of the day, wizz-bang controllers or super-quality-hi-def are both TECHNICAL achievements. SHOVELWARE will effect all systems and my interest goes as far as 3rd party support and the quality of THEIR products. Cause here's a fucking revelation: if I didn't like the 1st Zelda, the 1st Resident Evil or the 1st Halo, why the fuck should I care about the latest and greatest evolutionary incarnation?

Maybe you don't, but other people certainly do, like the fans of those particular series. You don't like them or aren't impressed by them, then so what? Not everybody is: it's called "personal tastes."SPC Brungardt wrote:Cause here's a fucking revelation: if I didn't like the 1st Zelda, the 1st Resident Evil or the 1st Halo, why the fuck should I care about the latest and greatest evolutionary incarnation?
All I can see is that you're simply cranky that there aren't more mecha or naval/air combat games...
Your next-gen/shovelware/third-party rant seems like a cluster of blabber, though. I can't really make that out.

I hear what he's saying, though. When the 'woozah' titles of all the new consoles - the reasons for buying the damn things at all - are rehashes, slightly better looking versions of a game you've probably already got, that's pretty uninspiring.
Of course his tastes in games are staggeringly limited - even worse than MINE - so he must understand that awesome niche games are always going to be a surprise. Nobody is going to launch a console off the back of little-known or new franchises, it's too much of a risk.
360 has absolutely no excuse, of course. It's been out for fucking ages, and there's still only one or two games that pique my interest.

Re: Am I alone? Unimpressed w/all next-gen consoles
There's not enough new stuff period. There are my personal tastes, but when the PS2 came out, many of these games I liked were completely new, there weren't comparable PS1 iterations. The PS2 has a metric SHITTON of games cause of it had market share. It got plenty of recognizable classics but ALSO the forgotten gems and the nich-games. The underlying point was there isn't a ton of variety on any console yet; it's too early to call who will "win" or who's "better." I'm less concerned about bottom-lines and fanboy-wars though than the the availability of a cornucopia of titles, something that simply cannot materialize in the 1st or 2nd generation of games for any system.
That will change but I also just like calling fanboys fanboys. Their adulation is justified if they're Nintendo fanboys because they get the 1st party titles they will take to their grave but for me, it's completely baseless, therefore, I'm unsatisfied with all 3.
On my tastes: those are my go-to preferences. I'll get the odd sports title, sometimes FPS [though on consoles, I really shy away from those].
I'll pick up the blockbuster RPG, the original but happen-to-be-great titles. Don't read TOO much narrowness into my tastes, I'm not living in a bubble outside of which everything is crap.

Bullshit. Launch PS2 titles were ALL hopeless rehases of PS1 games. Tekken Tag was the best game on the console for MONTHS. Sony has a huge library because the PS2 has been out for a gagillion years, not because they pushed the titles out faster at launchtime
It sounds like you're just trolling to me. 'Hurr hurr teh consolez suk' and all that. I love how you separate the two 'just launched' consoles from the 'been out for a year' 360... oh wait you don't. Woo! The number of games demanded at launch by Brunny is more than 27, and the number of games after a year is more than whatever the 360 has! Plot that graph people.
[EDIT] Replace my post with 'obvious troll' repeated a dozen times, please. He even ADMITS it.

You have to keep in mind, though, that the remaining two-thirds of the Seventh Generation just came out only last week, and that the one that was first released a year ago was an American-made system with a primary emphasis towards the mainstream US gaming market demographic.SPC Brungardt wrote:There's not enough new stuff period. In short, I don't think there's enough for you to bitch about yet in the first place. Come back with the argument in like a year, year and a half, and see.

Oh shut up I like calling fanboys fanboys and all the Wii launch titles are franchise rehashes. Like... err... Zelda. AND THAT'S FUCKING ALL. I'd think there'd be enough mech games on 260 though. Xbox had plenty of mech games.

Mecha games just take up more shelf space that can be filled with EA sports titles.Stark wrote:I'd think there'd be enough mech games on 260 though. Xbox had plenty of mech games.

Yes good point, the X360's been out a year now, and it only just now got a SYSTEM SELLER. It's had GOOD titles before, or re-hashes [the yearly madden, the what, bi-yearly DoA, and the token Ghost Recon, etc.]In short, I don't think there's enough for you to bitch about yet in the first place. The PS3 is the hardest to develop for, traditionally has the most support but just fucked up so bad it may never materialize. The X360 still isn't getting good Japanese 3rd party support and Nintendo's 1st Party games are great, but not my cup of coffee.
It's not like NOTHING will materialize, but the PS3 could very well bomb, there's no guarantee the American 360 will ever get true Japanese support and it's kind of sad that if Nintendo wins totally, I'll have to put up with non-hi-def for years. I don't put much emphasis on super-gloss, but I do if I could have a fun game that looks BETTER but don't because the other 2 competitors consoles can't get those games.

It had gameplay that actually would work without a Gundam skin. Yes, that's a low bar, but I do like mecha games.VF5SS wrote:I thought that game was really crappy. Gundam vs. Zeta Gundam is much better.SPC Brungardt wrote: ...Zeonic Front, the one great Gundam game
The DOMS were worlds faster, the more maneuverable suits were much more forgiving. It was a slower game, with some sloppiness, but it actually had some redeeming value; route planning, all the equipment, stealth played a large part in it [the enemy's 'alertness'] it was sort of MGSy in that sense.VF5SS wrote:Does the game stop being clunky after the first mission? I was pretty turned off by the lack of speed and maneuverability of the Mobile Suits.
Still, that was PS2, I'm just worrying: PS3 may never recover, X360 may never woo over Japanese, and if Wii wins by default I hope to God developers don't kowtow to real or perceived biases [kiddy game system, Nintendo] and not innovate or port the good games on the other, potentially flagging systems. Then there's the sad fact that PS3 and X360 may have but a handful of gems that're exclusive to their systems. THAT'S the console-driven market screwing the customer over, the underlying point of my worries.

Gundam Mobile Ops, right? That game looked pretty ho-hum too. It's just Battlefield with Mobile Suits. The game looked as bad as Gundam: Crossfire (or Target in Sights or whatever). Hopefully, even if the Wii comes out on top, the new controller will prompt some innovations in terms of how players go about controlling the action. I understand SPC Brungardt fears that a Wii dominated market will just get us more throwaway SRW titles and silly SD Gundam games. Being a Niche gamer is a hassle, ain't it? I'm currently looking into good robot game for my Sega Saturn. Haha

X360 has Chromehounds. Which is, to be fair, a crap singleplayer game. Online multiplayer though, when you have five times the parts options and are playing 6v6 team games, is pretty damn special. It wears off eventually, because the only gametype is last man standing or destroy base. I still got a good couple of months play (and I mean solid, all day, no other games in the system online play) out of it. If it had some different gametypes, and some objective based stuff, it would still be going.
On the whole, the Xbox 360's library is pretty damn good. I might be a bit of an aberration, I buy lots of games, but I've got 14 full price games for mine, and another 10 Live Arcade games. Consider, This means that in only one year I've found more games for my Xbox 360 that I wanted enough to pay asking price for than I did in the four years I've owned a Gamecube (I have 22 GC games), and with the exception of a couple of PS2 titles and a smattering of Wii games, all my most wanted are Xbox games.
Looking down the reviews at Gamespot, whilst there are a few lowly 5s and 6s in there, the majority of games are 7 or better, and that generally means that if they're your bag you'll take a lot of enjoyment from them (even a high 5 generally means that there'll be something in there to enjoy, if you're a real genre fan). There are a couple of stinkers, like Bomberman Act Zero, but they're generally easy to spot and avoid.

Physics as in why the Macross PS2 game is better than Macross VFX-2. One having an engine based on the Aero Dancing games and the other being "plane going nowhere." You know, something that makes it seem like you're in a real world. Something more Armored Core and less arcade like.SPC Brungardt wrote:Then they wouldn't move at all, haven't you a HAB-shaped bone in your body?

It's something new for Gundam Games at least. Crossfire as far as I could tell looked like a prettier version of Journey to Jaburo.VF5SS wrote:Gundam Mobile Ops, right? But things definately need to distance themselves from most of the latter Gundam games, which are much too "arcade arcade lol"...
