I purchaced an EVGA GeForce7600GS 256MB RAM card for my computer, running Windows XP 64. I'm using an ASUS A8V Motherboard with all the latest drivers and BIOS installed. The chip is a AMD Athlon 64 Dual Core 4800+.
I can play EVE Online and it works just fine with the card. However, when I tried to fire up Media Player Classic or Quicktime, the computer would slow down to the point of inoperability and the monitor flickers on and off.
The technical support person said that XP64 is really buggy and I would be better off with the 32 bit version. The card says its Vista ready. So, is there anything I can do to get it to run on XP 64? If not, is XP32 really better than the 64 bit version?

I am capable of rearranging the fundamental building blocks of the universe in under six seconds. I shelve physics texts under "Fiction" in my personal library! I am grasping the reigns of the universe's carriage, and every morning get up and shout "Giddy up, boy!" You may never grasp the complexities of what I do, but at least have the courtesy to feign something other than slack-jawed oblivion in my presence. I, sir, am a wizard, and I break more natural laws before breakfast than of which you are even aware!

I have similar problems, and I highly suspect that cooling could be an issue. This is why I recently bought myself a new case fan. I highly suggest that if you can do it for very cheap, direct more cool air into your case (place your intake next to an open window or air-conditioner as the case may be). Also check that you have good airflow through your case (a little harder to do really cheaply).
My brother and sister-in-law: "Do you know where milk comes from?"
My niece: "Yeah, from the fridge!"

I don't think that's an issue. It isn't a geadual slowdown. It's working just fine two seconds ago, but as soon as I double click the video file, it essencially freezes.
It also happens when I try to render the file in Microsoft Graph Editor.

The important question is do you really need X64 to run anything 64-bit specific? If not, then why not just use the 32 bit version since the 64 one is supposed to be really buggy?
"It's you Americans. There's something about nipples you hate. If this were Germany, we'd be romping around naked on the stage here."
First, I don't know if its ACTUALLY buggy or if its just the guy not knowng what else to say.General Zod wrote:The important question is do you really need X64 to run anything 64-bit specific? If not, then why not just use the 32 bit version since the 64 one is supposed to be really buggy?
Second, if I have a 64-bit chip, I would like to be able to do 64 bit stuff on it. Persumably, using 32 bit programs won't be as efficent.
Edit: Oh shit, I remember now. This was the computer that kept crashing when Windows XP Service Pack 2 was installed. That's why I decided to use the 64 bit version.

K8 processors are fast in both 32- and 64-bit code and at any rate, I bet you aren't running many 64-bit programs other than XP itself. 64-bit code can also be slower in some instances.Yogi wrote:Second, if I have a 64-bit chip, I would like to be able to do 64 bit stuff on it. Something else is wrong if XP SP2 is unstable.Edit: Oh shit, I remember now. This was the computer that kept crashing when Windows XP Service Pack 2 was installed. That's why I decided to use the 64 bit version.
Well it works fine with Win XP SP2 now. I guess updating the BIOS did the trick.
