Social networking sites
Who here is a member of the various "Social networking" sites? (NOT dating sites). I refer to sites such as Myspace, Facebook, Google's Orkut, etc.
I'm curious as to what people here can tell me about them and how they compare as well as the crowd and typical demographic present in them (High school kiddies in Myspace, Spanish and indian in Orkut, etc').
Also post your profile in the sites here if you want, I've been looking for more people I Know to give me an excuse to actually check the sites every few days or so .
OP aside I have a Myspace and Face book page and I've started a Facebook (Stardestroyer members only) group.

I originally took a very anti-myspace stance for various reasons (controlled by the evil fox empire, promotes pathetic, annoying behaviour, full of morons etc), however since then I've been more or less forced to participate because like it or not, in a teens world, if you're not in, you're out. I've come around from my rabid hate since then, to a general acceptance of it as a necessary evil.

I made another MySpace account, since I deleted the last in a fit of rage. I met my ex there, so it didn't help matters knowing that all the time. But I recently started up again and now I'm with another girl off there, one who is a real cute cosplay geek.
So what I'm saying is, it's a good tool for me to get poontang. The other 99.99% of that site I'd happily pull the plug on.

Indeed. The only way to see it on Facebook is to already be a member of it. Very secret-like.Master of Cards wrote:It's hiddenDEATH wrote:Er, your link doesn't work for me. Now the question lies in if I should invite him to our group or not... Hmm...
I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season."

I recently got myself a Myspace account, though I don't plan on using it much.

I also have a LJ, but I keep that friends-only.

I didn't know Poe was on MySpace. Interesting.
Also, DEATH: your background makes me cry...
Of course, I just have the default layout, so I'm probably not one to talk. But it's better than 95% of the "custom" layouts I've seen, so maybe I am.

Bah, tis cool n basically geeky (Better than basic ). At any rate I couldn't find any fictionally based layouts, and I'm certainly not going to spend lots of time going over the big ass unorganized databases of html layouts or whatnot .RogueIce wrote:I didn't know Poe was on MySpace. Interesting.

At first I hated it. My ex told me about how lame I was for bashing on it. Then one morning, after a night of drinking, I made a page. There may be some people on there that I don't like, but I do get to keep in contact with my friends that have lost or no longer have a phone. You can still get spamed but that is a part of life these days.

I am curious about operating a myspace page/blog/facebook. However, I am very concerned with security. A number of jobs I have applied for in recent times ask whether you operate your own webpage and if so it wants you to provide the url. If I get accepted to the forces when I reapply, I will have to go through Developed Vetting which involves, I imagine, an extensive internet search of anything I might have said/done which makes me a potential risk. Having a personal blog may make me look like a blabbermouth; untrustworthy with secret information.
I am already conscious of what I post on webforums because of increasing employer/potential employer intelligence - I wouldn't want to rise a potential career over an angry outburst I had said years earlier on my blog. That said, I feel I am missing out on what otherwise would be an enjoyable online experience. Maybe when I get sorted with my career I will be able to be a bit more free online.

Well, you can always use Facebook and MySpace as simply social networking. You don't have to write on your MySpace blog, just add friends and keep in touch with them.
Facebook doesn't have a blog per se (that I've seen) but it does have this Notes thing that can act like a blog I suppose.
As far as it would potentially affect your career if you blogged, that I can't help you with.
