Shep plays CoD2...

Yes, I know I'm SOOOO last year once more.....
Some commentary, the graphics engine is pretty good, it allows smooth framerates at 1280x1024 on my rig except in some areas....
Secondly, whoever decided to eliminate the save system used by every other PC game....should be shot.
Thirdly, the health system is screwey; No matter how many times you get shot, just rest for five seconds and all is fine!
This is looking more and more like a game they designed primarily for the consoles, and then ported to PC as an afterthought.
Thank God I paid only $19.95 for it...and that I still have my COD1 and UO CDs and manuals somewhere....for multiplayer...

I actually thought the save system was excellent - save for one or two sections in the WHOLE GAME it auto-saved almost as obsessively as I quicksave normally.
And as for the health system - it made the game way more fun. I hate health-pack economics especially in a game where it doesn't really fit. And don't think of it as getting hit and taking cover to "suck it up and take it like a man", think of it as your luck slowly running out...

Unless the game autosaves you right before you run in front of a MG-42...

Weird, that never happened to me... You could just drop back a single checkpoint if you wished. And don't tell me that you've never dropped your quicksave in a REALLY bad situation (I know have - I've done it MANY times).

I liked the COD2 health system, because if you play it on say hard difficulty it only takes like one or two good bursts to kill you. The health system in COD2 was to encourage players to tkae cover and be more circumspect, rather than rush the enemy MG then use a health pack and do it all over again. I thought COD2 allowed you to quicksave? Hmmm. COD2 multiplayer is where it's at there the health system comes into its own, getting shot in the head is instant death, and a rifle shot or SMG burst to the torso will kill you as well.

CoD2 on the hardest setting is insane... And there isn't a quicksave, at least that Irecall.

The health system is lame. It removes whatever small amount of healthpackage (equally lame) other games had, and replaces it with a no consequences = no thought paradigm. Who cares how stupid something is, do it anyway and so long as you don't die you'll be fine!
The same philosophy could be applied to guns: why have limited ammo? Just let people keep reloading forever, instead of wasting time picking more up and having to actually think about something as tedious as ammo conservation.
Of course, for kids games like CoD it's not really an issue. I wonder if it could be adapted to work on proper games... but I guess sensible games aren't 'you against the world', and have frequent breaks between missions etc.

Its a fucking hard balance to strike, and I honestly think that OFP did it best (OH DEAR GOD MY LEGS! - MEEEEDIIIIIIC!!!!), in that it was easy to die and ANY restoration required action by a third party (unless you were playing a medic trained character).

Yeah, but OFP had firefights and sensible ranges with plenty of missing. Games like CoD are close-range deathfests by comparison.

Ha, especially single player; some of the multiplayer maps are much larger but if you ever play on a server with kill details to include range, you realize CoD is like most not-OFP games in that it doesn't draw distance very accurately.
A 300M kill would be "wtf CRAZY" in a lot of FPS's. In multiplayer though, the auto-healing doesn't help enough cause of the fact that fights are close-range deathfests. I really hate CoD2 online though compared to United Offensive.

PLaying Some more of COD2; and it makes me realize just how stupid the gameplay is...it's basically a giant version of whack-a-mole; you shoot the germans who keep appearing seemingly out of nowhere in
the same positions over and over again, until a "GAME SAVED" message
appears.

CoD 2 is fun to play through, once. Ideally you can borrow it from a friend for a couple of weeks. The only thing that really annoys me about the game is that it forces you to go close-quarters combat. Suppose you need to clear a house. I, for one, like to grab a rifle and shoot the dirty Fascist through the windows and doors of the house as they look out to shoot . Problem: the house has an unlimited supply of Fascists until you and your magic anti-respawn field enter the house and clear it. This is most annoying.

Call of Duty is most fun when played on the highest difficulties. Which ameliorate the positively silly amount of damage you can usually take, and reduce you to the level of the common soldier (generally one or two shots kills you). Made Stalingrad a lot of fun.
Still, the infinite-spawn house clearing bits are annoying, especially as your likewise infinitely spawned military colleagues frequently refuse to go into them until you've half cleared them anyway, leaving you bereft of support when you most need it.

I concur with vendetta. COD2 regular difficulty is like the easy difficulty level on most FPSes. Veteran level is actualy more like the regular setting because it reduces your health to same as AI soldiers. On other difficulties the game is unfair as it gives player much more hitpoints.
I think COD2 would have kicked ass if the game had implemented something like the Replica AI from FEAR. Features like recharging health, balancing the weapons and use of cover is perfectly implemented. But that work by the devs is wasted because the AI is too dumb.
