When I saw the first bit of news and shots of Derek Smart's latest wreck last week, I decided not to post about 'em, mostly because everyone knows the guy's a flop and not worth the time. Then he had to open his mouth. Firing Squad has an interview with him, covering his newest flops, to be released next year. Not only can you physically smell his ego oozing off your monitor, but he also make takes a shot at the Freespace community:

Every single statement or interview I have seen with this guy has been filled with enough arrogance and alternate-reality delusion to give the Bush administration a hard-on. Who is he fooling? Who does he think cares? Nobody even remembers him except when talking about huge idiotic debacles, and then only as an object of ridicule! Does he really think he is still taken seriously?

I also have to wonder if he can get through the day without constantly self-fellating over his "IP." In the interview he talks about his "IP" and ideas like they are the coming of the Messiah. Right, because it's everyone else that held you back, huh? You were just too "ahead of the curve" and "focus-centric" for them, weren't you? Idiot.

Oh, and by the way, GALCOM's screenshots are not only unimpressive, they also look like total crap. Low poly models coupled with low res textures plus some simple effects. Who the hell does he wants to impress with that?

Despite that, you can bet that even a high end dual-core machine with the latest graphics card will still struggle to run it.

His most infamous is Battlecruiser 3000AD, one of the most bugged, incomplete games ever to exist.
After all the hype fell flat on it's face, Smart naturally blamed everyone except himself.

But if you want the short version, he's a troll. One that's managed to learn enough about coding and 3D rendering to make a series of shitty games on a shitty, bug filled engine. And when he's called on it, he starts up flame wars and legal actions.

Some overview

Think part egotistical monster, part overblown flaming asshole. Basically one of his first games(Battlecrusier 3000) he practically proclaimed is the end all, be all of space sim material.

The end result was this buggy half assed product that even EA would've shuddered to put out.

But that's not all...he searched the internet and engaged in flame wars with his critics calling them idiots for not recognizing genius. And some companies he's sued for various reasons. His entire bit has been done by more then a few website, and it's really sad to see what the truth is behind this moron.

And oh yes...he's an astounding liar....easily on Stewpot's level(a few being him earning a PhD, as well as owning parts of Mars).

I don't think Boll believes in his movies any more than anyone else in the world. He knows he's running a scam. Smart actually thinks he's the real deal.

Berman & Braga?

These two are hacks, but their egos, while pretty much standard for Hollywood, aren't anywhere near the size of Smart's.

Mel Gibson?

Mel Gibson is a lunatic, but he's a good actor and a good director. And compared to even the rest of Hollywood, he isn't carting around a big ego, let alone compared to Smart.

Tom Cruise?

Even nuttier than Gibson, and extremely egotistical, to the point of suing pretty much everyone who makes fun of him, but Cruise is a good actor. He got away with being crazy for years because he could put butts in seats. It wasn't until he replaced his former publicist with his Scientologist sister that he went all the way around the bend in public.

I'd say he's got accounts on his forums registered under 40 different names through foreign proxy servers to make his games seem more popular.

It'd be my guess that he cultivates the "arsehole" persona to garner gaming media attention for himself. As for Battlecruiser 3000AD- in all fairness, that wasn't his fault, it was the publisher. The game simply wasn't ready for release. He persisted and he fixed it, and he's been improving the game edition after edition ever since. It's unfair that everyone else who releases a buggy, shit-don't-work-game naturally gets to blame it on the publisher pushing it out the door early but somehow Derek Smart gets blamed for BC3000ad.

Of course, that doesn't mean the games are good- they're consistently behind the curve technologically and the gameplay is not my cup of tea.

When I first heard of the game and (subsequently either got a free copy or dwnloaded for free (not pirated)) I thought the premise of the game was a good one until I played it.True you can play in one of several different careers, but there was no main story or side quests that I knew of. I quickly got bored of it and uninstalled the game. Plus the game was hard as hell to figure out.
