They basically sent you one copy of the game if you subscribed for a full year. Great gimmick that got them tons of subscribers.

NGamer still does that. I don't know if it draws in new subscriptions, though.

IIRC, I already had a subscription and wanted to renew early to get the game, but never got the chance.

Years later, I would play it and quickly discover that the original Final Fantasy was far more playable. (More variety weapons and armor, no clunky popup menu for every action on the map screen.)

Not me, I started from the beginning. Best was the original Final fantasy guide. That was excellent. Nearly all the maps, all the monsters, all the weapons, equipment, spells, practically everything.
