Hmm. Sounds similar to Resident Evil.

Bioshock: Plane crashes
RE: Helicoptor crashes
Bioshock: Corpses
RE: Corpses
Bioshock: Mutated citizens ambush
RE: Zombies, also mutated, ambush.

However, it does seem interesting.

Trust me, if this is as good as its predecessors, Resident Evil will look like a limp-dicked third-cousin who looks nothing like it.

Bioshock comes from System Shock. Which was out way before the first RE ever came out. Also, every RE that has ever come out has been total steaming turd compared to the original System Shock, nevermind this beast.

Uh yeah, because base similarities...obviously aping on RE1.

Fucking A, that is akin to saying that Star Wars is similar to the legend of Excalibur.

That looks pretty awesome. Shame it'll be ruined by the 360 port, though. Oh wells.

Bioshock is basically System Shock 3, in a manner similar to how Perfect Dark is Goldeneye 2, except that the improvements will be considerably greater.

I've played Resident Evil 3 and System Shock 2, which were released at about the same time. One has nothing to do with the other.

You can start with the level design. SS is considerably more open and non-linear than RE, rather than going down predetermined paths, you can pretty much explore the levels as you please.

Then you have the RPG elements, RE has none, SS allows you to build your character as you wish. In SS2 you could be a hacker who takes things carefully and slowly, a brawling brute, a psy-ops operative, or any combination of these.

Then there's the atmosphere, System Shock is genuinely creepy and scary, the lack of resources can induce sheer terror until the mid-game. In Resident Evil you never find yourself resorting to whacking zombies to death with a blood-encrusted wrench because you must conserve your precious bullets for more dangerous things.

Finally, the story. System Shock has a chilling and compelling story with one of the most memorable villains ever. RE... okay, I'll admit the Nemesis is fucking awesome, but still.

System Shock II is the only game I've never finished because it creeped me out too much. I can't think when I'm having a heart attack.

Didn't even get past the two-hour mark.

It's the only game I've ever played where something meant to be disturbing actually worked: the ghost who says goodbye to his kids them blows his brains out always freaked me out on the way to Shuttle Control.

I was more disturbed by the ghosts and logs of the Von Braun's security going apeshit. Particularly the group of people in the mess who get executed by paranoid security officers. You walk-up and see the corpses, blood, and shell casings, then the scene is replayed. Chilling stuff.

Not until DOOM did I find anything similar to what System Shock had.

*Edit to expand on that, the first four hours of Doom replicated what the first TWENTY hours of System Shock 2 was... afraid, out of ammunition and with shit jumping out at you all the time. Even worse when a certain AI shows up...

I've said it everytime, the opportunity to remake the original System Shock with the BioShock engine simply can't be missed. SHODAN, for fuck's sake. You can't leave that sort of opportunity alone.

System Shock II was awesome too, but in terms of atmosphere, scaryness, and feeling so alone, the original was still the best.

I would hope they do both honestly. More people need to play a game that actually fucks with you visually and aurally versus cheap thrills we are used to today.

The issue with Shock I believe is that the rights to it are spread all over hell. EA have most of the bits. If Bioshock sells, they'll probably try and cash in with a Shock sequel, but getting them to do it right will be a challenge.

I had no idea that Bioshock was the sequel to System Shock II. Therefore, I retract my previous post comparing Bioshock to Resident Evil.

It's only the sequel in the loosest sense. Storywise it's nothing to do with System Shock. It is, however, based on the same principles of open ended gameplay. However, this time they've added a killer artistic design to that, rather than a mishmash of Aliens meets Cronenberg that informed the Many. (and hopefully the end won't suck like the Body of the Many did)

RE2, RE4 and the remake disagree with this.

I await Bioshock, but they'd better not fuck up such a concept. I will be most displeased if they do.

I think my analogy holds. It's a sequel in the same sense that Perfect Dark was a sequel to Goldeneye. This is what is called a "spiritual sequel" where the storyline and universe have jack to do with each other, but the core gameplay elements are essentially the same. I've seen the trailers to Bioshock, and have high hopes about it rivalling System Shock 2 in awesomeness.
