I just built a new computer for gaming, and I am having some issues with it:

1) Quicktime and iTunes' installers will NOT run. I double click on the installer icon, a little hourglass appears next to the pointer for a second, and then the computer does nothing.

2) I cannot install Flash on my computer. I double click the installer, the progress bar fills up to 94%, and then I get the following message:
"An I/O error occurred while installing the file. This is normally caused by bad installation media or a corrupt installation file. <Abort> <Retry>"

This same message appears no matter how many times I download the installer.

3) I have installed Everquest, and the patcher is acting weird. After downloading all of the files that I need, the patcher just starts downloading them all over again. I checked the log files, and the patcher thinks that all the files that I am downloading are the wrong ones.

4) When I run Windows Update, it detects that I need to get "Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1". However, the download fails. The error message that I get is "Error Code: 0x80246002".


I know that this seems like a wide variety of problems, but the fact that they all have to do with installations seems to be more than a coincidence.

I have installed all of the drivers that come with windows, and with the Motherboard. The Motherboard is an Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe. The hard drive is an Maxtor ATA/100 Internal Hard Drivbe (300 GB). I have the rest of the boxes, if anyone needs to know other parts.

Quick addition: I just tried to install Direct X, and got this message:

"A cabinet file necessary for installation cannot be trusted. Please verify the Cryptographic Services are enabled and the cabinet file certificate is valid."

I have absolutely no idea what that means!

This sounds an awful like Active Armor corruption. The Nvidia hardware firewall is well known for corrupting downloads (which is the reason why they dumped it in Nforce 6x0 chipsets). I'd suggest uninstalling any Nvidia ethernet drivers; just use the Windows drivers, and try your downloads again.

You can install the ethernet driver,just make sure not to install anything except it.

His hard drive might also be going.

Possible, but so far all of his issues have been with downloaded files.

I had installed the nVidia Firewall and Active Armor. From what I have read here and on other message boards, this sounds suspiciously like the problem. I tried installing Dawn of War, and it went fine. I just couldn't run it because I was unable to download DirectX.

I am nuking the system, and I will try not installing the nVidia ethernet driver or the firewall.

You might need the Ethernet driver - just don't install the firewall.

Yeah, you will. It's the Firewall driver that's the problem. I said Ethernet because I hadn't had breakfast...

The firewall was indeed the problem. I reinstalled everything except that, and the computer works perfectly. I wonder how NVIDIA let such a buggy piece of crap out onto the market.
