Fallout and XP

So I've got the Fallout/XP problem: black screens that you have to uncover by making it redraw. Using 2000 compatibility mode cuts it down to a low level, but it's still deeply lame. Is there a proper fix?

Is it patched?

Yeah, it's 1.1. Is that good or bad? I think my version is installed as 1.1.

1.1's as good as it gets. I haven't heard of any patches that attack this specifically. C and escape take care of it quick, though, and it doesn't seem to occur often enough to be a big problem.

Yeah, in 2000 compatibility mode it occurs less, but still once every minute or so. I can't play the game like that.

Once every minute? I usually only get it once every half hour or so at worst - then again, I just did a normal install and never really mucked around with compatability, so it might be something else. Giving it a whirl in 95/98 mode might not hurt.

Only other thing I can think of would be DirectX's hardware acceleration, since I turned it off due to it borking up Black and White and never bothered to toggle it back on.

Nah I tried all the compat modes, 2000 seems to work best. In the others, it blacks the screen as soon as I change right-click modes. I don't remember having these issues before, and the interweb is full of people complaining but no solutions. Is there a more modern Fallout frontend?

Again, I haven't heard anything. I doubt there's a frontend since there isn't a big operation gap like you get with Dos games, and No Mutents Allowed doesn't have anything that seems to address this directly (and the only 1.1+ patch lists a whole bunch of bugs I've never heard of). Like I said, I'm thinking it might be something with DirectX since that's the only thing I've ever mucked about with from the factory settings.

You could try turning hardware acceleration completely off.
