Hard Drive Orientation
If I was to mount a hard drive upside down (to relieve strain on its 90 degree SATA connector), would it have any effect on drive operation or lifetime?
Re: Hard Drive Orientation
Perhaps - if it has exposed circuitry on the bottom side, you increase the odds that dust will settle on it and short-circuit it.Arrow wrote:If I was to mount a hard drive upside down (to relieve strain on its 90 degree SATA connector), would it have any effect on drive operation or lifetime?

Re: Hard Drive Orientation
This doesn't seem terribly likely, given that video cards and other electronics in the system can accumulate a lot of dust and never experience this problem.Magus wrote:Perhaps - if it has exposed circuitry on the bottom side, you increase the odds that dust will settle on it and short-circuit it.Arrow wrote:If I was to mount a hard drive upside down (to relieve strain on its 90 degree SATA connector), would it have any effect on drive operation or lifetime?
In any case, the internal mechanisms of the hard drive probably won't be negatively impacted by any particular orientation. You could mount them on their side if you wanted, too.

You can mount modern HDDs in pretty much any orientation so long as they get at least a breath of airflow, and don't get shaken about.
