I'm in a small office where I recently started working on a four-month gig, and I just got their network up and running. Well, almost running; let's say walking. There are three computers, but the two I'm interested in are running WinXP Pro. We don't even have internet access, so I'm not particularly concerned with security.

Anyways, there's only one printer in the office, which is installed on what we'll call Front (via parallel). The idea is to share this printer with computer B. File and printer sharing is turned on, and I can see (and share) B from A. I was able to get A to share and play nicely by setting the following Administrative Tool setting:

Administrative Tools > Local Security Policy > Local Policy > User Rights Assignments > "Access this computer from the network"

to "Everyone."

And then there was access from B to A, and it was good.

Unfortunately, it doesn't last. There's no obvious cause, but every ten or twenty minutes or so, it reverts back from "Everyone" to no setting at all, or, effectively, "no one".

I don't know what the deal is, but it gets a bit frustrating to have to go back and forth between B and A to print something out.

Anyone have any tips? Alternatively, is there information I've left out?

Wait, so, on the printer properties page there should be a Security tab, and you're saying that there's nothing listed under that tab whatsoever? Not even the Administrators group, or the Power Users group?

On the computer with the printer connected, right click choose sharing and security.

Share the printer with whatever name you prefer.

now the way to find the printer is \\computername\sharename

click on the security tab, and give evereyone all premissions.

That should do it

The problem is that, unless I add "Everyone" to the property I mentioned in Administrative Tools, I can't access anything on computer A. I tried adding specific computers to the list of those with permission, but when I do that the setting gives me an idiot warning that it won't save.

Uraniun235: it isn't on the Printer properties at all, but on the Administrative Tools hierarchy of settings, that I'm having this problem.

Try "authenticated users" then..

And check if you are using simple file sharing, Simple FS is EVIL!

Tools/Folder Options/the second tab Have swedish OS at work no idea what it's name is/ uncheck the use simple file sharing.

Oh and BTW is there some sort of firewall installed?

Kill that firewall crap if it is.

I tried "Authenticated Users". Didn't work. And I'm not using Simple file sharing.

I just installed SP2 today, thinking that that might have a positive effect, but it didn't. The firewall is there (the one that comes with Windows) but it isn't active.

I'm thinking that there are two avenues left: reinstall Windows or just buy a printer for my desk :O).

Are you making these changes to your local security policy as Administrator or as a user under the Administrators group?

This is very strange because you should not have had to fuck around with the local security policy at all. I'm guessing you didn't install Windows on these computers; maybe your predecessor fucked around and broke something.

Oh, no, I didn't set these computers up. If I had, they wouldn't be broken now.

And I'm logging in as a user with Administrator privileges. I suppose I can try logging in as the Administrator; hey, why not?
