Yay Sony for cleaning this up before EU launch.

Yay community for holding their feet to the fire!

What the fuck are you talking about? 1.5 is for Japan only, and it only adds contactless payments.

Do you own/have access to a US PS3?

No? Stop shitting up the thread, then.

You know what, how about you provide a link to the changelog of the update for the US consoles then? Hmmm? I'm sure news like this would be covered somewhere eventually.

I don't even see anything on the Playstation 3 home page about this, and I imagine this would be something they'd want to at least marginally notify people about.

In other news, if this is the case, congratulations, Sony. Your $600 monster can now do with firmware update what my $100 machine could do out of the box. There was really no excuse for this in the first place. That it's fixed is nice and all, but it's really just a really bad indicator of just how much Sony wasn't ready for this round. Consoles are supposed to be the kings of working right out of the box, ease of use being a major selling point over PCs. Hopefully other console makers won't see this as an excuse (hey, Sony did it, it's not unreasonable that WE do it too).

Did they fix the murky pixelisation problems that the PS3 has when playing PS2 material?

Presumably yes. Of course, given the fair and balanced in-depth coverage Xissy gave in all three of the lines in his first post, we can't really be sure.

Maybe he means that Derek Smart struck up a deal with Sony, and now all of the Battlecruiser games work flawlessly with the PS3, which I have to admit would be QUITE the feat, making that interface workable with a gaming controller.

Despite Xisiqomelir being a retarded asshole, I'll post the article I found anyway.
The latest PlayStation 3 update has hit for North American users, bringing PS3 firmware to version 1.50. The full change log is, sadly, noticeably absent—please make this available with each update, Sony—but the most noticeable change comes in the form of fixed display of PSone and PS2 games not running in progressive scan mode. That's right. Former eye-poisoning backward compatable games are now fixed. I just popped in Okami and Metal Gear Solid 3, with both displaying on par with their original hardware platforms. In fact, they look pretty fantastic. Amen!

Excellent news, meaning one less reason to have my North American PlayStation 2 hooked up to INPUT 2 on my HDTV. Thanks for fixing this, Sony!
Link (it sure is nice when people include links, isn't it?)

Cool, thanks for the article.

Still doesn't really change my criticism that it should have been done right from the getgo anyway, as I noted above.

It almost would have been more fitting for the Battlecruiser games to be ported to the Playstation. It's like a match made in New Jersey.

Hah, that's just what I was thinking: "screw Xis, I'll just look for it on Kotaku..." :)

Sony does not provide changelogs in English for the English firmware updates. On a sidenote; that link confirms there is a 1.5 update avaliable and no it doesnt show up on the damn Sony PS3 website(at least when that article was written).

There's a shady (extremely, IMHO) reason for this: Sony never admitted to the problem. Listing it in a changelog now would be tantamount to an admission, so they're just going to act like it never happened.
