So, I've registered my e-mail address in my Wii Address book, but I am unable to mail that address and my inbox contains no new messages. Could someone throw me a lifeline?

When you added the email address, it should have recieved a 'Wii Friend registration email'. This may take some time: when I first got my Wii (perhaps a busy time) it took several hours. In any case, the email address for the Wii itself is w[wii number]@wii.com.
