Recovering Data from Damaged Entourage files

My boss's Mac laptop died earlier this week, and when I came to copy the backups of his Entourage data to another machine, neither of them wanted to play. It is a bizare coincidence that they should be corrupt, but that seems to be what has happened.
A mate suggested trying to open it as a text file, but at 2.62 GB the main database file is much too big for any text editor I am aware of, and a google search turned up nothing usefull.
Anyone have any ideas as to how I could get the information back, in particular the contact details? Thanks in advance.
