Those who's who think there computer has the graphic power to handle any game, I present to you Oblivion fans, one little mod that proves your computer is nothing.

Image

Presenting the everything is viewable at distance mod
This mod intends to make the ugly distant view of OB look like the near view.
The render engine is pushed to the max, so only users with the strongest machines (core2duo 2.6GHz+/gtx8800) will have acceptable frame rates (15FPS+) with all detail enabled.
You have been warned!

To get maximum eye candy you may combine this mod with the excellent QTP3: http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/ View.php?view=OblivionMods.Detail& id=2363

Also you may push detail level even higher with QTP3 high detail lods:*link is coming soon
The only reason I present this mod here is because I tried it... and I swear... my video card was screaming as it tried to render the view.

Arrow....

Boot up your XP install and run that 8800GTX/SLIed into the ground, with pics. :D

Holy crap, I think I just made a mess in my pants. o.o I want it! Heh... my PC can't even run Oblivion at all. Dreaming of playing it with that mod is like torture. Sweet, sweet torture.

Am I the only person who doesn't find that screenshot particularly impressive? :?

Yes, you're seeing here more draw distance then I've seen in any other game, with far higher level of detail then any other game.

No, I don't either. Yes it's technically very impressive, but there's a load of graphical artefacts due to the fact that the game wasn't intended to render that kind of view distance; for example one section of the central cities wall is black, and some of the trees aren't blending with their surroundings very nicely. You can also see the ground texture tiling in quite a few areas.

About the detail you're right, but plenty of first person shooter games have had a greater view distance. The Delta Force series and Operation Flashpoint/ArmA (and possibly FarCry) for example.

Still, it's always neat to see the things mod authors come up with.

Although I agree that it's technically impressive, its aesthetic value is rather low for me. The level of detail is far too low for it to look nice. I don't know if it's a lack of higher anti-aliasing, or that the level of detail is constrained by the pixel size. Or maybe it's just the fact that my new monitor is significantly sharper than my old CRT. I must admit that looking at it on the CRT is more pleasing.

Err, the XP install got nuked... But I guess I can persuaded to run this with a single GTX and no AA (broke in the current driver).

I've been following this on the official forums and the Canadian Ice forums, and it is technically impressive, but the hardware isn't there to run it, yet (and probably won't be until TES V comes out).

Now if Bethesda had bothered to put in a real LOD system (especially one that could take mod environments into account), we wouldn't need mods like this. Seriously, the LOD systems from Far Cry and Armed Assault are much more impressive, and the ones being used in Crysis and Alan Wake look like they'll set the new benchmark for LOD (especially the later, which uses a lot of procedural LOD).

Alan wake really shouldn't be used as an example, it takes 5 threads to run, above what any home PC can do reasonably.

That's a bad argument, since FireFox is currently using 17 threads. And Alan Wake isn't above what will be reasonable by the time it's released. I'm going to be really pissed if the next TES game uses this same, shitty LOD system.

Also, that mod isn't going to run for me. The 8800's ability to page in textures from system memory wasn't great under XP, and its basically non-functional under Vista; translation: I got 1 frame every five seconds. And this mod also runs right into the DX9 small batch problem, so even if the VRAM paging wasn't an issue, I'd still be looking at only a few FPS.

You know what I mean, it's 5 heavy duty threads, not some pissant things.

And from what I understand, they're all scalable, so you shouldn't have any problem running it on a fairly modern machine so long as you play the detail-performance balancing game.

It's a minimum dual core, with hyperthreading on the bare edge of being capable of theorectically running it.

Damn cool. Of course, it just goes to show how small Oblivion really is. Thats showing what, a third of the world?

Like I said: fairly modern machine.

It's nice, but not impressive. I dare to say that Armed Assault with an infinite view distance and would look MUCH better.

Take ANY modern game that has some kind of outdoor environment, turn off the view distance and voila. It will look just as impressive and will bring your machine to it's knees.

[boast]Pfft. Mine could do it, obviously.[/boast] But why would I want to? I've already got a texture mod that makes the game look good from any vantage point of the game world ...

I would say Vanguard is the closest to something like this, being able to see capital cities kilometers away is nice.
