SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Sony Corp. (6758.T) is on track to ship 2 million PlayStation 3s to North American stores by the end of March, and expects shortages of the video game console to have completely eased by May, a top executive said on Tuesday.

"April or May is when we feel like we're going to catch up to demand and have product fully in stock across North America and stay there," said Jack Tretton, chief executive of Sony Computer Entertainment America.

Asked about widespread reports on video game Web sites that stacks of unsold PlayStation 3s are a common sight in many electronics shops, Tretton told Reuters in an interview that the console was still out of stock in some areas three months after its November launch.

"It's a testament to the fact that we've been able to manufacture and ship units on a greater pace than any previous console," Tretton said.

"Our goal is to fill shelves across the United States. Our goal is not to have empty shelves, it's to have full shelves. If we have empty shelves, that's one less consumer who could have bought a PlayStation 3," Tretton said.

Sony's PlayStation 3 is the cornerstone of the consumer electronics giant's strategy to dominate home entertainment.

The PlayStation 3 -- which costs $500 or $600 depending on features -- has a hard drive to store game data and music, and can play DVDs using Sony's Blu-Ray high-definition technology.

But the machine faces stiff competition from Microsoft Corp.'s (Nasdaq:MSFT - news)
Xbox 360, which launched a year earlier and has an extensive system for online play, and Nintendo Co. Ltd.'s (7974.OS) Wii, which features a unique motion-sensitive controller.

Consumers and analysts have praised the PlayStation 3's graphical prowess and potential, but they have also raised concerns about its high price, a weak line-up of current games and what has been perceived as arrogance on Sony's part about the desirability of its flagship product.

"The PS3's biggest opponent right now is itself. It's really just competing against its own PR," said Jeremy Dunham, PlayStation editor at entertainment Web site IGN.

"The PS3's problem right now is there have been a lot of broken promises. It has a lot of things to overcome, but the brand name, the franchises and good exclusives ... all should generate interest," Dunham said.

Tretton, who helped Sony launch the original PlayStation in North America in 1995, said Sony was on track to ship 2 million PlayStation 3s to retailers by the end of March.

"We're in pretty good shape to do that. The early returns are quite favorable," Tretton said.

In January, Sony sold 244,000 PlayStation 3s, compared to 294,000 for the Xbox 360 and 436,000 for the Wii.

The company has said its target is to ship 6 million PS3s worldwide by the end of March.

Shares in Sony fell 5.8 percent in Japan, hit by a surge in the yen and a sell-off in global markets.
...Go ahead. Say it. You know you want to.

Although I'm more intrested in when Nintendo is gonna break this Wii Shortage...

...Or the DS Lite one, for that matter.

There's a PS3 shortage? I can go down to Target any time of the week and see 3-6 in the display case, and I have been able to since early january.

Ssshhhhhh. Don't tell Sony that. It might force them to acknowledge reality.

You mean the fact that the system doesn't seem to be doing all that well compared to the Wii and 360?

I think they mean shortage of demand, not supply, gotta think positively

At this point all i can think of is relating to Sony is executives having sessions of chanting a "PS3 is soldout" mantra every day for 15 mins.

I'm really starting to wonder about Sony. How can any company have it's head so far up it's own ass blowing kisses that they are completely oblivious to the world around them. The fact that they can maintain that there's a shortage when it is abundantly evident that there none is scary.

I mean, most PR at least has some semblance of reality.

Hey, guys, remember how the Sony PR chief for PS1 and PS2 quit on June last year and the PR has gotten more and more dubious since?
Well, i found a reveling picture about the new Sony PR manager.

I hope you're referring to the shortage in customers, not units

It's like the Bush administration if it set up a hardware firm. Remember, Sony is the only company to really report its sales in units produced, not units sold. They likely have a massive shortage of units being pumped out, even if the ones already on the shelves are stuck there gathering dust.

In other news I think the Wii supply in the Greater Richmond Area of Virginia has met up with demand. not only was I able to get one, but upon shopping for remotes a few days after I got my system, I saw a few waiting to be sold.

Looks like they might have finally caught up on the supply problems in my area at least.

Well, the DS Lite isn't in such a shortage anymore. It's relatively easy enough to come by online and once they finally shipped more several weeks ago, I was able to pick one up in store without any issues.

Microsoft does too, don't they?
I remember that Microsoft reports "units sold" as "units we sold to retailers" rather than the amount sold to customers. So when Microsoft said "10 million XBox 360's sold" they included the pyramids of XBox 360's sitting in every Best Buy in the numbers.

Sony shipped = Manufactured

M$ sold = Sold to retail

Nintendo sold = Sold through to consumers

I remember someone here was desperate to find an Onyx DS-Lite last year, and I laughed about it, normally living in a small town means you get all the good stuff later, however I lucked out, and they actually sent DS' here the first one I saw was an Onyx, I Lolled.

I go to this site every now and then to check out the sales figures for all the consoles: http://nexgenwars.com/

Supposedly Sony have made 2 million consoles for launch in europe so you would expect their figure to jump to 3.5 million on launch day but everywhere still has loads of preorders left so I'd be interested in how much the figure goes up. If they can't shift more than 1 million on the European launch they're screwed.

Don't heh. Those numbers are totally inaccurate, and I know what I'm talking about on that score. This is a much more accurate estimate site, and allows custom charting as well.

Comprehensive my arse. So the entire continent of Europe doesn't warrant even naming now? I could swear it's a bigger market than any of the others last I checked.

Shhhh... They want you to forget that they haven't arrived there yet. Maybe if nobody mentions Europe, people will think Sony is winning the War.

Blame the dearth of European retail console sales tracking agencies.

What DS Lite shortage? I walked right into Walmart and bought one, just three weeks ago. Admittedly, it's still hard to find online for a decent price, last I checked.
