Forced windowed mode?

Is there a universal command (i.e. *.exe -window) that'll force a program to run in a window instead of fullscreen? (I want to run Red Alert in a window)
Or is it a feature that has to be programmed into the code?
If so, is there a 3rd party app that'll do it?

AFAIK there is no universal mode. A lot of programs however in their configuration files will have a 'window' option which is by default set to off but CAN be set to on

If the game doesn't have the feature as an option already, you're pretty much screwed. Plus it might not be capable of running windowed if you don't have a powerful enough machine.

If the game doesn't use a 3d card, you could try running it in a virtual machine, which can be used in a windowed mode.

*digs this back up*

I just finally found a way to do this while trying to get Starfleet Command to work on my widescreen monitor. It may not work for your game, and it has some annoying visual glitches, but it's better than nothing:

You can run Doom 3 in windowed mode if you rightclick the doom icon and ago to properties. There in the target slot after Doom3.exe you type:

+set r_fullscreen 0

Perhaps thereĀ“s something similar for your game.
