A simple question. What would it take for the Xbox 360 (an following systems) to make it big in Japan?
At the least #2 and yes maybe even #1...

It would have to not be an American product.

Aka - something other than FPS, RTS and sports titles.

Games the Japanese want.
More than just a collection of average to above average games they need a blockbuster; something lik Dragon Quest or some big Japanese fandom game as an
EXCLUSIVE.

Like Blue Dragon?
Basically, they need more of that.

I'm going to guess they'd need AT LEAST four of them. Plus capture a Franchise like final fantasy...
That's what I'm getting from this thread...

Yeah but that's already coming out on the wii and there would be no reason to get an X-box if they already had a wii. Microsoft would be better off stealing franchises from sony, I'm sure there's enogh established games developers who are dissoloutioned with the PS3 because of the difficulty of making games for it and are worried about poor console sales.

If they could somehow convince Hideo Kojima and Squeenix to jump the shark, they'd pretty much ensure the death knell for the PS3.

Well, I meant "like" as in "Do the M$ thing and make a shoddy copy", not actually buying the Animal Crossing IP from Nintendo, who wouldn't sell anyway.
They can try stealing PS3 third parties, but I have a feeling that they're going to instead prove that their understanding of the Japanese market is based on historical stereotypes and nonsense, and churn out a bunch of turn-based FMV-packed jRPGs instead. These games will then be outsold by the next Yawaraka Atamajuku and Monster Hunter Portable installments.

I'm hoping my fellow Gundam Fans in Japan will like MSG: The OYW, however, from what I can tell Crossfire got good ratings (It's a slightly tweaked Journey to Jaburo with pretty graphics). But anyhow they're also coming out with Gundam Musou I think for PS3, and that's based on the Dynasty/Samurai Warriors system, so yeah... I'm hoping my fellow Gundam Fans that live in Japan aren't being total Sony Whores... however that may not be the case, and Sony will forever keep making shitty Gundam Games...

Wasn't Crossfire that awful PS3 launch title, that had to have been the worst PS3 game yet released? That's a pretty big distinction, given how utterly awful the two 'fighting martial artist' games were, and the somewhat less than impressive ports released.
Honestly, I don't think Japanse gamers want more 'japan-styled' games. On the 360, Ninety-Nine Nights seems more or less the exact Dynasty Warriors formula that's spewed 14 best selling sequels or whatever, there's mech games that make Armored Core look silly. There's also the quite fun Dead Rising, since the Japanese looove zombie flicks/games. Not to mention fighting games, which they eat up too...
Soooo. Um. What the hell does the Ps3 have over that for the Japanese Market? A promise of MGS4, which may even be cross-platform? Some vague innuendo at FF13 in another two years?

Vague innuendo at FF13 is probably it for the PS3 at the moment in Japan.
In order to make Japanese people take notice that there is such a thing as an Xbox, they would need either a Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest game brand new and exclusive.
Not games a bit like them, like Blue Dragon, which although it's reportedly thoroughly great, it's not got the name.

Because of Idolm@aster, a greater percentage of Japanese XBox360 owners use XBoxLive than their American counterparts. They need much much more of this, games which appeal to Japanese, perhaps exclusively to Japanese.

If you mean
this one, then sadly yes... however, if you search for Mobile Ops on youtube, you'll see why I'm willing to put a lot of hope into it.

For all its ills, strong nationalism has definite economical benefits in cases like these. A population that dislikes foreigners and foreign products means you can effectively keep out imports without having to get involved at a government level with tarifs or whatever and risk trouble with the WTO.
Note - I personaly detest nationalism, this isn't an attempt to say that it is a good thing in the world.

as if there wasn't enough Tokimeki Memorial and whatever flavour-of-the-week pachislot gameport
( but yeah the only 2 games that where constantly sold out where blue Dragoon and idolmaster...)
On the other hand the 360 in japan has a lot of games that are cheap as hell and helluva fun: one chanbara VorteX is pure Genius as is Earth Defense Force 3

Oneechanbara VorteX is one of the games I really wish was going to be localised, because slashing zombies to bits is inherently fun, whether as a bikini clad cowgirl or a japanese schoolgirl, and doing so in online co-op would be even more so.
Unfortunately, it looks like they've bottled out of it.
EDF3 is on track though. Not sure whether it will keep it's budget price though.

i'm pretty sure that if EDF3 sells good, Oneechanbara will follow, Ubis soft seems to be willing to publish Senko no Ronde Rev.X oversea, but one kille title that the Square-Enyx need to export is Project Sylpheed first time since forever that we have a great space shooter on console
Posted: 2007-03-05 07:25pm
by Vendetta
Yeah, it's possible.
Though I think that EDF3 is going to suffer from a full whack asking price, because the game experience is pretty much a shinied up budget title. (For those that haven't heard of them, it and Oneechanbara are part of D3's "simple 2000" range, which up until now have been priced at around ¥2100, rather than the normal full price of ¥7000)
The games, from reviews, still feel budget, even though they're full price.
Over G/World Airforce/Energy Airforce 3 got kicked in for that as well, though I can't recall whether previous entries in that series were budget games)
What needs to happen is that they need to enter retail with EDF3 at a reduced asking price, like Rockstar Table Tennis, in order to try and pick up some impulse buyers and spread some word of mouth.
(I'll be buying it though, you get to fight off pretty much every 50s monster movie ever, from giant ants to killer alien robots.)

They need games Japanese would care about.
A Japanese-exclusive Final Fantasy and/or Dragon Quest would make the XBox 360 a legitamite competitor. Enough exclusives would seal it in second.
As it is, the XBox 360 has very few games the Japanese would care about; basicly Blue Dragon (which tripled 360 sales overnight) and DOA4.

Don't be stupid.
iPods and Levi's sell like hot cakes in Japan. iPods blow away any equivilant Sony product in the Japanese market.

And

Personally I'd say the situation is gradually getting better.

That's one or two products in comparison to whole bunch of other American products the Japanese refuse to go near. Cars, televisions, computers, video game consoles and their subsequent games. Even if some American products do sell every now and then, their is an obvious bias against American produced products in Japan.
