God of War II

May as well stop waiting for someone else to make a thread.
I'm in the bog right now, and am about to go after the Golden Fleece. I've introduced Theseus intimately to the door he's been guarding all this time, and killed that boat captain yet again.
This game is, simply put, a blast. The Titans are suitably... Titanic, and it was a nice touch when they revealed who's been narrating the story all this time.
And ripping the wings off griffons, then hurling them downward because gravity isn't going to take care of them nearly fast enough, never gets old.

Before I get this, can it be played on its own, or do you have to have a saved character from the first one? Like a fool, I deleted my God of War saves when I got rid of the game recently. Not sure what I was thinking.

I can't think of a single reason why they would force you to buy the original game first and keep the saves. It's nice when a game lets you reuse the save, but making that mandatory is a recipe for disaster.
In short, I am pretty damn sure you don't need those saves from the original.

No, you don't need a save from the first game to carry over into this one. You start off pretty much fully powered up, right where you left off after the first game. I was hoping a saved game from the first one would open up some bonus features or something, but nothing so far.
I'm on spring break this week (I love working for the school system), so I've played this a LOT this week. I finally beat the game last night, although it was on normal setting and I need to play through again on the higher difficulty settings to unlock all the bonus features. Concerning the ending (warning,
MASSIVE FUCKING SPOILERS!)
First, I'm pissed at being left with a cliffhanger, and twice as pissed because part 3 will be on the PS3 unless something major changes. What did everyone else think of the ending itself? If you haven't seen it yet, the game ends with Kratos altering time, taking the Titans out of time during their battle with the Gods and leading them in an assault on Olympus in his time, yelling that he's coming for Zeus. I'm sure the next game will have him taking on the remaining Gods one at a time until his final, epic battle with Zeus himself; but I can't see the game ending with Kratos winning. I think that something will happen, someone will offer Kratos a chance to return to his normal life (with his wife, or bringing his brother back to life) and he'll turn on the Titans. Some of the conversations with the Titans would make more sense that way, since they all call Kratos "Servant of Zeus" and seem angry with him even though they've been imprisoned since the last battle with the Gods and couldn't have ever met him. Does anyone else have some other theories? Maybe I'll have a better idea after unlocking more of the bonus scenes.

I got the game today, and I've proceeded to get myself stuck. In the cave of Typhon (big blue Titan blowing wind on the trail you have to walk), do I have to toss all the enemies into the bonfire, because that's as far into the cave as I can go? Is there any way to interact with the three stalactites, since they're glowing and get their own shot when you approach them, though they appear to lead back through part of the cave? Does any of this have anything to do with getting Prometheus into the fire pit he hangs over after you cut some of his chains?

Yes, you need to toss the guys into the bonfire. About 5 or 6 should do it, I don't remember exactly, but there's a set of runes that start to glow as you burn them. I don't remember the Stalactites off the top of my head, but if they're glowing then you can interact with them somehow. If this is all in the same room, then I think they disappear once you sacrifice enough of the bad guys.

Well, if that's the case, I may have to start over. I ended up only throwing a few in, and whenever I restart, there's just one guy.

That's alright.
You probably missed the Urn, too.

I'm pretty sure I've missed all the urns so far.
Well, I managed to get through that problem. Turns out I failed to notice an important detail, but when I did, I got to Typhon, got an item from him and used it to drop Prometheus. Now I'm back in the soup.
In the Ruins of the Forgotten, there's a chamber with a button in the center of the floor, and one in a small chamber to the left, separated by a low row of spikes. I found one corpse, and used it to weight down the center button, but can find nothing to put on the other button. Both buttons need to be held down to open the gate. I can't jump the spikes with the body on me, and can't use the Amulet of the Fates at this location. Did I miss a detail?

Yeah. Break the walls behind the body and the button. Fight off the enemies, and check out the river floating in the revealed area. Put the body in the water and let it float away. Go back to the button's alcove, and the body will eventually float to you.
