My monitor went very dark suddenly. I thought it hard lost power or something but when i looked closely I could make out what was being displayed, it was just very dark.
I tried altering the settings using Windows display settings, and then by using the settings buttons on the monitor itself and neither of these worked.
I've borrowed my brothers monitor and thats working with my PC fine.

So i'm guessing the monitors bust (close to 4 year old Packard Bell flat screen), anyone know if it can be fixed or do i have to get a new one?

The only other thing I can think of is the power adaptor, from the standard AC computer power wire to DC that the now suspect monitor uses.

If it was the power adapter, you shouldn't see anything at all, and the monitor's power light would be off. I suspect your monitor's backlight died, from what you've described (and being a Packard Bell, I can't say I'm surprised). If that's the case, you could probably get replaced, but it'd be cheaper to get a new monitor.

Have you tried plugging it back in and using it again? I'd be interesting to see how it behaves now that it hasn't been used for a few hours.

It's either the backlight or the backlight's (internal) power inverter, more likely the inverter I think. It may be possible to find a replacement on ebay.

Working inside a CRT is not something I'd recommend.

Busted backlight or inverter. You can get that fixed, but it might cost nearly as much as a new monitor. Ask around.

Weird. I switched with my brothers monitor and when i plugged my old monitor back in to try some of the stuff people have suggested it was working fine

I wonder if one of the wires was loose or something?

It is an LCD, right?

In either case, it could have just needed a cool down period, in which case the problem may pop up again (although if it is a CRT and it happens again, you're basically screwed).
