Hey guys, as some of you might know, I run a little fansite about the upcoming MMORPG Star Trek: Online. Anyway, a few days ago I had a chance to talk to John Eaves, who is the designer behind ships like the Enterprise E, about his involvement with the game. I thought people here might be interested in hearing what he has to say generally, too... you can check the interview out over at http://www.startrek-online.net/?page=stocast and it begins about 16 minutes in. In turn, there's a transcript you can read instead, if you don't want to listen! :D

Cheers.

The Sacagawea Class looks nice, at least they're moving into what could actually be called a warship and cutting down on aesthetics and nonessentials. I'm hoping Star Trek does better with their MMO than Star Wars did with Galaxies.

PS: I have to agree, the bad guys' name sounds really wierd and lacks any ability to inspire fear at all.

What about pre-NGE Galaxies?

Anything post-release Galaxies was fucked up. The live team had no clue what the game's overall design was or what direction to take it at any point. Once they implemented the omitted parts (mounts, vehicles, cities) it was all blind flying.

I haven't kept much track of STO's design decisions so I can't comment on it in the same regard.

I actually find that NGE had more pros than cons, the thing I didn't like was I could become an Imperial Officer before a Stormtrooper, the JtLS stuff costed way too much for a new character, and Mustafar was laggier than all hell; the loss of the three Krayt Dragons I'd had since before they made Krayts untrainable was minor in comparison to those. I think another problem was people over reacted about the whole NGE thing, to the point that the only Cantinas that had Entertainers were either Player Owned, or Mos Eisley and if you were lucky, the Capital City of Tatooine.

In fact, I may restart my account, there were rumors they were going to cut down on the number of Jedi by making them uncreatable.
