Oblivion 1.2 Patch Released

The 1.2 patch for Oblivion has been released (
Download).
The patch fixes several bugs, improves the LOD textures via shader (I now prefer the default landscape LOD to any of the LOD texture mods) and file loading (yes, its a noticeable improvement).
However, it's currently wrecking havoc with some parts of the mod community. Fran's mod no longer works, anything that relies on Script Extender no longer works, and whole lot of people are having trouble getting mods to run (the same mod will run for one person, but not another - use Oblivion Mod Manager to better avoid these problems). Fran's mod should be patched fairly soon, and Script Extender will be compatible by Tuesday (that's directly from the creator). On the up-side, most mods do appear to work without issue.
Some have also complained of new bugs, but I haven't seen them.

Oof. I'm guessing OOO will get thrashed if I install the patch now. Even if it's fairly stable, I'm a serious bug-ophobe in my RPGs (I can't stand the thought of one niggling line of dialog or one item drop disappearing somewhere). Nice to hear they finally got a second patch out though.

So far, OOO appears to have no issues with the patch (this is from dev_akm, one of the beta testers for OOO, who is also involved in a bunch of other mods).
The new patch fixes the video memory leak. Before (and this was really noticeable with large texture replacers), the video memory usage would climb and climb when moving between exterior cells. Hell, HTF's PCB (purge cell buffer) mod was made just to fix this problem. I just did a Chorrol-Weye-Skingrad-Anvil run, and the memory usage increased and decreased appropriately. The only problem I had was lock-up when I reached Anvil; but this bug is most likely from Nvidia's drivers (never happened in XP, but it does in Vista).
The new LOD is much, much better. The stutters have been significantly reduced (I only get one, half second stutter when loading a new batch of cells), and a new shader puts noise on the LOD landscape texture and does a very smooth transition between non-LOD and LOD textures; it does an excellent job of blending Qarl's Texture Pack 3 with the LOD textures. Buildings and trees still pop-up, but now they pop-up all at once and without any notice frame hits.
Thinks are looking up, but I think I'll wait until Fran's is fixed before I do any more serious testing (I almost wish I still used OOO, but its been so long since a major release...).

Will it affect any of the official add-ons?

No, it does nothing to the official add-ons, so they still work, and they still have their bugs.

Wait- now they release a new fucking patch?
Does it do everything the unofficial patch (which I haven't installed) fixes?
Will my Bag of Holding still work?
How about the absolute MUST BTMod?

The patch list is rather short, while the unofficial patch list is very, very long. And the patch has several other undocumented changes (such as HDR lighting no longer looking like a "Nuclear Dawn"). From what I've seen on the official mod forum, the unofficial patch will be updated soon to account for the new patch. However, from my own testing, the unofficial patch appears to play nice with the official patch (although I'm sure there will be isolated issues).
No idea on the bag of holding. It should work, as long as it doesn't depend on OBSE.
BTMod works (I'm using as part of the larger Phinix UI Mod).
Most of the mod compatibility problems appear to be simple date-stamp/load order issues, which OBMM fixes.
Edit: Here's the link to the latest
Official Forum thread on the patch and mod compatibility.

I got Oblivion this past thursday but occasionally the game goes dark and then crashes whenever I try to enter a building or city. I've patched the game but it still does the same.

You're going to have get into more detail than that. Start with you machine's specs and the game settings.

The expansion comes out in 2 days, so it will probably come boxed with that, right?

Huh. Can you give a more detailed description of the crash behavior? And you've updated all your drivers?

As I understand, the patch is part of the expansion.

The game would crash randomly but when it does happen it is from when I try to enter a house\city\cave or when I do a fast travel. After loading it would go black and then about a minute later crash.
Also all of my drivers are up to date. The only other weird part about it is that when I launched the game for the first time it said that it didn't recognise the vid card even though through the options it recognised the vid card.

Delete your INI file (My Documents\My Games\Oblivion\Oblivion.ini) and launch the game by going directly to Oblivion.exe (bypassing the launcher). This will force Oblivion to generate a bare bones INI, and you can start modifying it from there. It sounds like the launcher set some options that conflict with your card.
If it still crashes with even the most basic settings, then its time to start stress testing some hardware.

So far so good everything is working well. The only changes I made was to the screen size.

Oh well, crashed again but this time I think it was from a memory leak. But the game started to slow down quickly then crash. This was from riding a horse.

Yeah, that happens. In 1.0 and 1.1, there is a memory leak when moving through exterior cells. 1.2 fixes this (at least partly).

I have 1.2.

I have 1.2.
You might have to tweak the ini cell buffers to load and memory buffer, in that case. Several of the tweak guides can tell you how to do that (the official forum's tweak ini thread is the most up-to-date).
