Online version

Three things in this trailer

1. An ingame view of the new engine(Which looks impressive, almost Crysis impressive)
2. You back in Liberty(AKA New York) City.
3. You get to play a frigging Russian, oh hell yes, after the Non-name Scilian, a nutty Italian and finally a gang-banger, you get to play as a former member of the Russian Mafia.

Looks like it's set between Liberty City Stories and GTAIII (assuming they have the same continuity...could just be a fresh start in a similar setting however).

I'm eager to see what they do with it storywise. A new continuity in the same locations? Using the same world as before?

The closed down ferry terminal and shot of Callahan Bridge makes me think it'd be roughly the same universe, but it could easily be an AU. Have to wait and see I guess.

Let's hope this edition of GTA has a decent soundtrack this time round; much of San Andreas' music selection was pretty rum...

Cool. Now it no longer looks like ass. Kind of hope it's a semi-sympathetic character this time around. Of course, even if they attempt to make them semi-sympathetic you can run down civilians to your little black heart's content. Ah, well.

So long as they give me Pressing Issues hosted by Chavez and pastor Richards as guest I'll be happy.

That looks frakkin impressive! Hopefully the PC version will be a (near) simultaneous release (I haven't really been following the game).

And I want to ride the rollercoaster!

gta4.net shows only PS3 and Xbox 360, also, it says New York City for the location, however, I'm not sure how official the site is, but it looks like they've run out of all the locales from the original GTA, so they might've gone more realistic with this one, I seriously hope not, because one of my favorite parts is how the characters are so stereotypical.

Anyhow, I'm glad to see a new graphics engine, the GTA series has been using the same one since GTA III, albeit with minor tweaking over time

Maybe I've just become more jaded with time, but I find it hard to get excited about a trailer that just pans around some buildings and then zooms in on the main character's face. I doubt I'll even remember I watched this in a few days.

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! :D :D

Looks fucking awesome. Glad to see it back in Liberty, though I loved the wide open spaces in SA. And I want the character to be just as much of a sociopath as the others were.

As long as there is a bitch please button I'll play. I'm sick of being a fucking errand boy for useless fucks who I know that I'll just end up killing in one or two missions time anyway when I'm already cashed up to the gills.

According to Gamespyit is actually New York and not Liberty City:
It's a beautiful thing once it's running, though. In flashing shots of the city, rendered incredibly in the game's next-gen engine, the camera pans across the Flatiron Building, the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, and the Brooklyn Bridge. Of course, there are also ads for Max Renda and "Top Hooker" on billboards, as well as the Liberty Ferry Terminal (lettering ominously falling off of the sign), the Getalife building, and a movie poster for "I Slept With Your Mom." This may be an actual, licensed New York city, but it's definitely got the Rockstar touch.

Looks like I may have another reason to get a 360.

Next question: What happens if I fly the attack helicopter into the Empire State Building?

Awesome! Hopefully one of the radio stations plays Russian folk music. Nothing like tearing down streets, running over hobos, while listening to balalaikas. :P

If this is supposed to be Liberty City, I wonder what they'll call the Statue of Liberty...Lady Liberty? :)

EDIT: Oops, just saw GameSpy's speculation that it might be NYC. It would be hard for them to rectify all of those landmarks, but I still hope RockStar upholds its fake city tradition and calls it Liberty City, renaming all of the landmarks. It just wouldn't feel right if you were actually in NYC.

They must be mentally retarded, and half blind, considering that you had the Liberty ferry terminal, and the frieghter had a "Liberty City" registration right under the name.

Almost Crysis impressive?

Yeah, sure, whatever. It's certainly next-gen, but the GTA series has never been a paragon of cutting-edge graphics.

I also just noticed a Liberty City newspaper at "Times Square."

Well, the reference to Koyaanisqatsi was certainly cool (at least for a film nerd like me), but a little teaser trailer like that certainly wasn't worth the preceding hype...

Bah I can dream that every building is destroyable.

As far as the hype goes, I never even saw it until suddenly the trailer was on Fileplanet and I gave it a look.

But.. between this, Crysis, and of course Bioshock, Mercs -2 I'm a eager little gamer.

Nice, but what time does it take place? Modern day NYC? Given it's trying for pseudo-realism now, it's more like The Getaway which was a fully accurate model of London.

So the protagonist, he's a Russkie then? Seemed it, or a dirty A-rab. :P

He's Russian, that's know, specifically the rumor mill says he's former Russian Mafia on the run because he's an old time Mafia smuggler and black marker who profited under the communists, but when everything went Capitalist, and the mob went hard core under it's new military and KGB trained recruits he has to run for it, to America.

I would not put past Rock star to make a GTA IV-Chicago with a Pakistani immigrant. Or hell, how about the Yakusa's or the Triads?

NYC Politicos Get Panties in a Twist Over GTA IV Trailer

Take-Two just can't catch a break. After the ousting of it's CEO earlier this week, their impressive new trailer for Grand Theft Auto IV hit the internets to many a gamer's delight. But apparently not everyone was excited to see it. I don't think there's any confusion over the fact that the setting for the new title is based completely on New York City, a fact that did not escape the notice and ire of NYC's political leaders. A New York Daily News article has a plethora of uninformed quotes by politicos that are all worthy of reading, but I will list the best ones right here:

"Setting Grand Theft Auto in the safest big city in America would be like setting Halo in Disneyland" - City Councilman Peter Vallone

"The mayor does not support any video game where you earn points for injuring or killing police officers," - Jason Post, spokesman for Mayor Bloomberg.

and even this quote taken directly from the writers of the article...

"In previous incarnations, players advanced through the game by killing cops, selling pornography to children and killing prostitutes."

I'm not even going to begin to delve into the myriad inaccuracies in these quotes, I'll leave that for you to do in the comments. But what I will say is that the hypocrisy happening here is overwhelming. What makes this any worse than the countless films in which NYC is depicted as the home to murderers, rapists and con-men? And what about the ones where the city is completely destroyed outright by outside forces? I have the feeling that if GTA IV had been a movie and Take Two was paying the city for its use, the reactions from these sanctimonious blow hards would be quite different. Flynn De Marco
I'm really sick of news organizations lying about videogames. Take 2 and Rockstar need to sue this newspaper, as not only are there no children at all in GTA, but the game isn't even set in NYC. The entire ESC needs to start urging developers and publishers to sue people and companies that deliberatly misrepresent their products the same way any other manufacturer would do.

As long as this is ported to PC, and has decent radio stations (Maurice Chavez and Lazlow both need their own stations again), I'll be happy :D

The question burning in my mind is:

Can.
he.
SWIM?

The single greatest contribution San Andreas gave to the series was the addition of swimming. No more losing all my weapons from running through a puddle...

well Vice City stories on the PSP has a limited swimming ability, and if you die or get arrested you can pay a $2000 bribe and get all your weapons returned...and that's on the PSP. So I'd bet that'll be incorporated into any future GTA product.

Haven't played Liberty City Stories yet, but that's next. I just want to complete all the crime lord missions, and have the fucking Sharks stop attacking me all the time.
