The Demo is out! I'm at 53% so far...

For those of you not familiar with the game, go here.

The installer is poorly packed. 10 minutes to extract a file? Fucking retarded. And the shit crashed on me.

WHAT THE HELL???
How could I have heard nothing about this game!?

I got it installed. Does not work well on the computer it is currently installed on. But from what I have played (it froze during the flight training where the CAG allows me to take control of the ship), it looks promising. I will install it on the other computer later today.

Does it have a hell slow installer that isn't appreciably smaller than the uncompressed data? Indie games do that shit all the time.

I'm surprised it's out, though - although it is the demo that was supposed to be out six months ago. I'll have to try it when I get home.

Hmm, didn't have any trouble here. But then, Freespace 2 runs great on my computer already, so any potential conflicts are probably already dealt with.

I was surprised by the voice acting, that's some quality shit, there. Sure, it skips in a few places, but they really bothered to put some emotion into it.

Too bad they didn't include more ships, it would have been nice for putting custom missions together.

Also, the installer is about half the size of the uncompressed data.

Multiplayer games are being organized in #btrl on irc.sorcery.net.

Runs flawlessly for me, damn; this shit is looking good so far, nice voice acting for an indie game too.

Downloading. I hate my internet.

Installing now, on an old beast that could just run Freespace 2...fingers crossed :(

And what a shitty installer that is.

Uhh, Ace Pace is a Fgalkin clone now?

Pretty!

This is on a PC that doesn't even have a proper graphics card (Radeon POS integrated graphics). The training runs smooth as butter, too, but I'm stuck thanks to not having a keypad...I can get the ventral thrusters to work wth Shift-Fn-+ but the dorsal ones refuse to fire.

So hit F2 and configure your keyboard.

Nah, I figured out what the key combo was. Also, apart from the Viper models, it's really just Freespace with bullets instead of lasers - I know it's just a demo but the immersion isn't really there.

Is there an offline skirmish mode, too?

This doesn't seem to be working for me, crashes immediately after clicking the .exe

You can start a private server and play with/against the AI. Otherwise, you'll have to FRED the mission yourself.

Does the demo have anything more than... those wimpy demo missions? (well done, though they be... I'd like to see some Galactica action!)

Also, what are the optimal settings for maximum pretty-ness?

Have you run the RunMeFirst(OpenAL).exe? (The name is kinda a giveaway what you're supposed to do  )

And IMHO the atmosphere is excellent, not least thanks to the good voice acting. Pity it's so short. I'd probably pay for a full-fledged game of that quality.

Well I think I have..

*edit* Yes definately have. Just crashes when I click the .exe does nothing to try and run it. Hmm... i'll keep trying but it probably doesn't like something with my hardware.

I had this problem, turns out I had to delete a pair of files and reinstall OpenAL for it to work. Check the Beyond the Red Line forum's sticky on getting the game to work. Its 2 dlls in the windows/system32 folder that you have to remove.

Support thread is here

About 90% of the time this sort of error is related to one of three sound errors.

1) You didn't install OpenAL (Windows users check the folder for a RunMeFirst file. Everyone else check www.OpenAL.org ). If you didn't run this before runing the game, run it now and see if that cures the problem.
2) Your OpenAL install is corrupt (Windows users check Windows\System32 for either ct_oal.dll or nvopenal.dll. These are the OpenAL 1.0 .dlls and they are causing the screwup. Delete them and run the OpenAL installer (RunMeFirst) again. )
3) You (windows users only) selected something other than GenericSoftware from the Launcher's Audio tab. Switch it back.

Wow, I can't believe so much has happened in the years between when I first saw Omniscaper working on something and its demo release.

Wow, shitty installer indeed. No shortcut on desktop. Creates empty folder in Start Menu. Fail.
