Yeah, I know that the majority of the games are crap, and the DS's library is much bigger (I have over a dozen DS games) and higher quality. And the battery life sucks, and quality control is terrible and Sony requires five dead pixels to take returns, and the price is high.


However, so, apparently, does the majority of people. The local Pawn One has zero DS's and FIVE PSP's, for $139.

If I boot them up and find no dead pixels, would $139 for a functioning PSP make it worth my while?

are you buying it for games? or as a multmedia device?

Yes, if you like the homebrew + PS1 functions, or the media functions, or you think some of these games will be appealing.

I'm holding off on the PSP till it's sub-$100, but I know quite a few people who are happy with theirs.

Will it play the 640x480 MPEG-4 files I already converted for my iPod? If so, I might consider it for that.

Out of the games in that list...only a few are remotely interesting, nothing really stands out as must have.

I like Homebrew, but I hear it's a pain since you have to revert to the old firmware to use it these days.

If it's for more than gaming and the price meets your intent, I'd consider it -- portable MP3, MPEG-4, picture viewing, and wireless Internet, all in a handheld that uses standard audio and mini USB ports...

I never used my psp for multimedia. The battery is slightly shorter than a ds, and depends on the game you are playing. It lasts an average of 5-6 hours. I've had one for over a year, never did get a dead pixel.

If you are using it for multimedia, you might want to buy a larger capacity memory card, like 1GB or 2GB because the one that comes with it is usually 32MB.

PSP game library is almost as large as the ds now, but there does seem to be more duds for psp. And then when you do find some decent game, a lot of them suffer from constant loading or long loading irritations. So, after all that, there's only a handful of classics and must-plays.

It's great with homebrew firmware and a 1 gig or greater memory stick. Emulation, homebrew, video/media functions, and the ability to run old PS1 stuff along with UMD emu for stuff you totallly legally own? It's quite good if you do that.

If you just buy the discs, then it sucks stock.

For me the PSP has tipped over into being worth buying. There are enough games out for it that I want to play to make me buy the console. Especially Ace Combat X, Daxter, MGS:PO, and Ratchet & Clank, also forthcoming Crush looks like an interesting take on platforming, and Monster Hunter Freedom 2 looks like a neat action hack and slash title.

Disgaea's coming out this summer. Hooray.

Metal Gear Acid 2, and Killzone Liberation are also good.

I'm getting a real kick out of Justice League Heroes You can play as Kyle!

If I were to somehow get a PSP for free, the first game I would get is DJ Max Portable 2.

I wouldn't use it for portable MP3. MPEG-4, I might.

There's a new version of the 'current' firmware enabled to run homebrew. This also allows the use of newer UMD Images, PS1 games and the web browser.

It’s not bad at all for 139 bucks. Even five dead pixels might not be very noticeable

I've owned a PSP now for over a year. I've found it to be a very handy wee gadget. If your traveling a lot the multimedia features such as wireless web browsing and the movie UMDs negate the need to carry arround an expensive laptop to star entertained. Plus with the ass falling out of the UMD movie market you can pick up the movies quite cheaply now (In the UK i can get 2 UMD's for £10 in Woolworths). The games aren't bad neither. I have Grand Theft Auto Liberty City Stories, Smackdown 2006, FIFA Street, Untold Legends 1 and Chilliconcarnage. Each can be very fun, though the WWE and GTA games seems to drain the batter faster than others.
