Is it possible to share mp4s to a 360

Post by Stark »

The 360 update allows it to play mp4s, and it works from a disk just fine. However, all the PC software I've used to share media only exposes the older set of media formats. Even the Zune player, while it plays and stores mp4s, won't expose it to a 360.

There are Mac third-party software that can do it - are there any similar Windows softs?

Problem solved. It turns out the Zune player won't share anything that's listed in the library unless the folders they're in are also in the 'watched folders' list. The whole idea of 'watched folders' irritates me, but manually adding media to the library will not work. This is lame, and I'm glad I found a FAQ somewhere that mentioned it.

Anyway, it works. Huzzah, the 360 is almost useful if you can stand the Zune player. :)

Er, new problem. The Zune 'watched folders' has added a folder by itself, and I can't remove it. It contains my mydocs folder, and thus fucking millions of little video and image files. I can't remove it from the list (it keeps adding it back) and I'm forced to regularly go in and delete all the crap it added.

However, the 360 sharing seems to be based on watched folders entirely - I can browse through the 'watched folders' from a 360 regardless of whether I have any files in there in the 'library'. How the hell do I get it off the list, and please don't say 'wait for it to finish looking through that huge folder tree THEN remove it. :)

You know, it's ironic that media sharing is actually easier to set up from a Mac to the 360. (albeit you need an extra piece of software)

I fucking know. Connect360 is simple, effective, non-invasive and uses the regular OSX file locations (like Movies etc). Zune player by contrast forces you to jump through hoops and present everything just right. I would describe it as 'even more rigid than itunes'. :)

To remove a folder from the 'watched folders' list I eventually had to unmount the entire disk.

How difficult is it to connect a 360 to a media-center based PC on the same network? My PC has XP media center, and I'm going to try to connect the two today.

Allegedly it's simple, just select Media Centre on the Media blade, and it steps you through.

In my many journeys and experimentation I tried this too - it still relies on the Zune player, as far as I can tell. The MCE part (at the PC end) seems to be for TV, recording, etc, and it uses the Zune player for other stuff. Also, even with the updates, the MCE would never accept the code the 360 gave me.

If your setup is simple, the Zune player is probably easy to work with - just add directories with content to the list, and blam. Don't add (for instance) a 'media' folder, containing many nested folders containing content. This is BAD. :)
