Searching for a New Laptop

My laptop's screen recently died (Bad fall), and given that the thing is no longer under warrenty (5 years old and all), I figure it's best to get a new one.
So I am looking for advice. My major uses if for notation, writing and internet access.
Video/Audio comes second to this, though as a film student, I do enjoy good quality screen work.
Overheating and Battery life are more primary concerns for my purposes. Laptops I own tend to...go through heavy use.
So, which companies should I look towards, and how can I avoid being sucked with Vista in a newer laptop?
