phpBB3 Release Candidate 1 (RC1) released

Does this mean we get to have 'fun' with a board software upgrade in the near/midterm future?

While it has nothing to do with PHPBB3, I have a PHPBB related question for anyone in the know.

I'm running a PHPBB board for NintendoPlayers, as a temporary solution (we will eventually write our own forum). We're having serious spam problems; bots that sign up and make scripted advertising posts or posts filled with pictures and links to porn sites.

How has that been avoided here?

Turn on the CAPTCHA test and require admin-approved registration to keep away the bots.

Another board I post on is using a phpBB3 beta, and I haven't seen any problems with the interface or software, but while it has some nice features, it's nothing that I'd undertake a massive upgrade to for a modded board if it would break the modifications.

With the amount of people this board likely pisses off, I too must recommend against upgrading at this time. At least wait till it's flagged stable, upgrading to a release candidate is opening yourself up for script kiddy attacks, which I'm sure this board has more than a few wishing they could "get revenge for being banned". Upgrading once the final release is out would be cool though, I like some of the new features.

I would run a testbed for version 3 for quite a long time before I considered moving the main board over to it.
