Trent Reznor: Record labels are thieves

Trent Reznor wrote:Well, in Brisbane I end up meeting and greeting some record label people, who are pleasant enough, and one of them is a sales guy, so I say "Why is this the case?" He goes "Because your packaging is a lot more expensive". I know how much the packaging costs -- it costs me, not them, it costs me 83 cents more to have a CD with the colour-changing ink on it. I'm taking the hit on that, not them. So I said "Well, it doesn't cost $10 more". "Ah, well, you're right, it doesn't. Basically it's because we know you've got a core audience that's gonna buy whatever we put out, so we can charge more for that. It's the pop stuff we have to discount to get people to buy it. True fans will pay whatever". And I just said "That's the most insulting thing I've heard. I've garnered a core audience that you feel it's OK to rip off? Fuck you'. That's also why you don't see any label people here, 'cos I said 'Fuck you people. Stay out of my fucking show. If you wanna come, pay the ticket like anyone else. Fuck you guys". They're thieves. I don't blame people for stealing music if this is the kind of shit that they pull off.
This is just the money quote. The whole interview is worth reading. I've added the swears back in to Trent's words.

The whole interview is worth reading.
Seconded.

Man, now I'm torn... to buy or to steal the new album...?

Just like Star Trek seasons costing over $100 on DVD...even though they're probably worth, at most, 50 or 60 bucks. I'd pay 50. But some Trekkies are willing to pay, no matter what Paramount charges...

Hey, they put the entire thing up for download a week or so before it shipped. :P Though it's down now.

Steal the album. Mail twenty bucks to Trent.

Why is this news to anyone? In my hometown in northern Alberta I always had to grit my teeth and take the bullet as I paid $25 for a Suffocation album when I saw that the latest Britney Spears offering was going for just shy of $15.

I don't intend to buy anything from a CD store in my life as long as I can order things directly from labels off the internet, particularly smaller ones.

Guilty. Though I got mine at Sam's Club and BJ's for like $70 each. I only got DS9, though.

EDIT:

As far as the record labels being thieves goes, umm... Duh. These are the same assholes charging 8 bucks for a cassett tape in the mid-90's, while charging upwards of $15 for your average CD, despite the fact that CDs are much cheaper to produce than the tapes. And the fucking movie studios do the exact same gods damned thing with DVDs. Though at least with most DVDs you get a ton of extras. Though they can't really be called "extras" when you're paying out the ass for them with no option of buying a cheaper version can they?

More reason to buy used CDs. When you buy from places like eBay, Amazon, etc, they garner at most 50% of their retail value but usually much much less.

Anyone who buys from the store is a grade A idiot. It's cheaper on-line such as from Amazon with their free shipping and no taxes (for most of us :P).

And that's why I buy music on vinyl records for a couple bucks each at the local flea market.
