Flipside

This is what we've mostly been working on the last ten weeks or so. It was a project for school, to produce a playable game in ten weeks. My group did this. The other groups mostly just managed to make short demo versions of their games (but very good demos).

Anyway, this is the game Flipside. You're an Aztec eagle warrior that has been sacrificed in order to ensure the prosperity of your tribe, by pleasing the gods. Unfortunately, you become some sort of pawn in a feud between Quetzalcoatl and Tezcatlipoca, where Quetzalcoatl ultimately wants to abolish the ritual sacrifices and Tezcatlipoca wants to keep them. The reason why I'm telling you this, is because we never had time to add sound to those lovely cut-scenes, so you will not understand what's going on. That doesn't matter though, this game works just fine without the story, and the cut-scenes are funny.

I think you'll understand how to play it pretty quickly. Figure out how to get from the start to the finish, by using your mystical eagle to manipulate platforms.

If you're wondering what I did on this project; I'm responsible for level 22, which you will come to hate (and also the bonus level "Castle Argh", which I personally feel is a bit of a master piece, even though you will hate it too if you try it), and also for programming the Demon enemy. It's also my fault that you can create your own levels with a level editor. I also designed several platform types (the different types of blocking platforms where my ideas, for instance), and almost all particle effects. I was designer/programmer, but most of the other programming work I did are things you won't notice.
It was not my idea (even though it's my fault) to have an installer instead of just a zip, though. I'm not a fan of those things. But the others insisted, so...
Also, yes, we know the name doesn't have anything to do with Aztec mythology. We couldn't come up with something better that we really liked, and DICE said it was fine when we talked to them, so there :P

So yeah, tell me what you think, and if you create any cool levels, post them here or send them to me, and they might become part of a future expansion pack

Edit- I hate platformers. While it is technically quite well done for a student project, and the platform swapping is entertaining, I gave up in disgust at the one level with the pacman guy chasing you to the tune of ominous music.

I did find the fact that mayan art resembles shitty cartoons funny though. It's amazing how primitive proportion and so forth was back then, like how the egyptians didn't know how to draw 3d people so everyone was flat. ^.^

But maybe I'm wrong or maybe it has kickin' rad fighting in it too. Who knows.
There's not much of that, I'm afraid. Maybe fighting the demons can be called kicking rad, but you have to jump and puzzle through 20 levels before you meet one...

Same problem here.

Works fine for me!
Damn, after about 10 levels I decided to try Castle Argh. Big mistake! Is there something I'm missing? Because I can't get more than a few steps in.

That's strange. I'm not the web master so I don't know why that might happen, but I'll talk to them and see. Also, check that you don't have some strange network or fire wall settings.

Yes, it's very tricky, but definitely possible. I made this walk-through of the first puzzle. Blue lines is how you should run, and yellow how you should shoot. Keep in mind that you have to be very fast with your running and jumping after you have fired.

Ah, I see, I suppose I was expecting momentum to be rather more directional than it is. This is like FreeSpace physics.

Aw man, any tips on beating the demons in level 22?

Run around a lot and try to get them into situations where they won't run to you, and so that when you flip the platforms under them, they have nowhere to go. Shoot one bird before you jump to the first demon, so he won't push you away when you land. Also, the linked platforms are your friends.
But yes, that is a motherfucker of a level. I had to play through it once to see that it was even possible, and it took me 18 minutes or something. The Lead designer wanted it to be really hard so...

A small update:

The school decided that our game was good enough to send it to some Danish competition (or something, I'm not sure what it was) for games and films from the Nordic region. Well, guess what: We won! :D
The prize was 5'000 Danish kroner (= $985.9), so that's not a whole lot, but fun nonetheless. We were mentioned on the local evening news (probably because they had someone that works there that came third. This whole event seems kind of obscure  ).

Also, we have upgraded the game a bit, so it's a smaller download, and I think they changed some levels too. I haven't had time to check it out myself, due to other projects...
