Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition
Came out today, and I was pleasantly surprised that it was out at $30 when I was planning on paying 50 for it again.
So far I've made it to just before the Castle and I must say, this game is an excellent example of how a game can be ported well to the Wiimote. The controls take a little getting used to, but by my second visit to the village I'm back into my grove, if rusty from not playing it for a year. About the only complaint I've had is sometimes the knife will go off at inopertune times, but that has mostly been eliminated now that I am familiar with the controls, though I do occasionally do it in the middle of a hectic combat, much like I would hit A trying to attack in Zelda:TP for the first half of the game.
Capping Ganados has never been easier than with the Wiimote(though I have not played the PC version), almost too easy now that I've adapted to the new controls. The Wiimote makes hitting objects in the air and the dynimite in those few precious ganadoes wielding it a much easier feat that before. And the knife controls(which is done both by swinging the remote and by pressing C+A for nonautomated attacks). So far I haven't had any complaints with the accesory motion controls. The automated knife swipes make it a much more viable weapon against ganadoes, and makes opening boxes and crates a significately less pain in the ass. Only once has it screwed me up in that it automaticly targeted a low hanging torch in the Village rather than the Ganado woman beneath it, but since the original controls for the knife remain that is not a huge deal. The biggest problem really is that its too easy with this, ammo conservation is a breeze with knifing downed/kneeling ganadoes with out the huge delay, shooting them is much easier since you don't have to wait for the analong stick slow aiming, and the action sequences are much easier since shaking the remote works faster than any of the button pushing did in the original(both El Gigantes so far have been taken down easily with two trips up his back).
Unfortunately there isn't anything new. Well besides the trailer for Umbrella Chronicles, which so far is being made out to be a House of the Dead styled rail shooter with two player co-op. It is suppose to be focused arround the fall of Umbrella, but so far all has been shown is Jill and Chris running arround the Spencer Mansion together(along with the giant snake), and Billy and Rebecca running arround(including a scene with the Giant Snake and Rebecca), as well as a scene of Jill in her RE3 outfit. Chris is also seen doing some flashy hand to hand against a zombie with his knife. Also there is a lot of scenes of Albert Wesker but none in game. Perhaps its from his perspective.
Overall I'd highly recommend the game to anyone that hadn't played on the previous generation, or if you only played the Gamecube version(like me) and want a different play through as well as access to the PS2 extras. But if you played through the PS2/PC version and weren't too crazy about it, this is not revolutionarily different.

I thought the game was quite boring. It was extremely repetitive. Going through the same shit over and over again to get to the little guy. There were no cg cutscenes (unlike the other games in the series) and the graphics do not make up for that.Admiral Valdemar wrote:It's only the best game ever, in all of history, being made even more AWESOME.
The gamecube version had much better graphics than the PS2 version, due to the PS2's lack of memory the texture detail was greatly reduced and many shader effects were simply removed for performance reasons. I"ve never really bothered to check how much more powerful the Wii is than the Gamecube because it's not really relevant, but I'd say it would be able to play RE:4 how it was intended. (except controls, keyboard and mouse is how games are meant to be played! )JLTucker wrote:I thought the game was quite boring. It was extremely repetitive. Please show me a game that can't be defined roughly as "extremely repetitive" and "going through the same shit over and over again".JLTucker wrote:I thought the game was quite boring. You're going to need to construct your criticism more than that.
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAW!There were no cg cutscenes (unlike the other games in the series) and the graphics do not make up for that.
Oh man. I thought you "FMV fo-lyfe" kind of guys had died out.
"Man it doesn't matter how good the game looks because pre-rerendered cutscenes make any game better!"
Never mind that RE4 looks better than the FMVs from the previous RE games.

Since when do you "stand in a single spot for 10-15 minutes" in RE4? For a lot of areas of the game doing that would get you killed pretty easy: one of the most important things you have to do is keep moving so you don't end up getting swarmed and bottlenecked.
That more sounds like a tactic of trying to take out as many enemies from a certain spot in an area and/or lure them to you so you don't have bother taking them out as you encounter them while going through.
Sure, you might stay in or around one spot every so often for a minute or two, but 10-15 minutes is a flat-out fabrication.

I think that's probably likely in this case--a few instances have baddies that spawn until you either kill so many of them the game gives up on you, or you are killed.JLTucker wrote: Maybe it is because I am not a good gamer.
There's a few times where it's advantageous to find a corner, stand in it, and fend off a horde of incoming zombies, but by and large there's no reason you need to stay in one place if you've got a shotgun or a good solid pistol. Furthermore, the 'shove' move allows you to work your way through crowds at times, and eventually the beasties get so difficult to take down that standings still isn't going to be a very useful option.
I wouldn't say you're bad, but I'd say you're probably being overly cautious and not utilizing the widest array of your hardware. Instead of killing absolutely everything, consider popping things in the knees and moving on after a shove, and clearing areas out later.

Tucker, there's no need for debate here. You're just flat out wrong. If you find RE4 boring, I can only assume you have ADD and find every game boring or craptacular.
But it certainly doesn't help that the PS2 version was sucky, though the lack of FMVs is good, because MGS set the standard by having great in-game cutscenes that didn't pull you out of the game with graphics that are totally different.

I'm starting my first runthrough of the PS2 Version, and have gotten to Chapter 3-1, and I can't see how it's 'repetitive hiding in corners'. I've been playing pretty much a running gunfight, flee-from-zombies game the entire time. Hiding in corners gets you hideously mauled, as they start closing in and you don't have any place to escape. It's been pretty good and varied, with environments mixing stuff up.
Certainly the gameplay's more varied than a lot of FPSes, as you actually need to rely on utilizing the environment as well a considering ammo consumption, medical supply usage and protecting Ashley. Not to mention then your shooting skills.

I have ADHD. I do enjoy some games, though I usually never finish them. I just did not like RE4. I prefer the other RE games, especially the RE remake, RE2 and RE0.Admiral Valdemar wrote:Tucker, there's no need for debate here. You're just flat out wrong. It's not that bad compared to a LOT OF escort stuff in other games. She's not retarded and sticks just really, really close to your back, and the enemies usually don't beeline for her.Stark wrote:I will never play this game. I mean, I haven't played an RE game for ages, but I've never seen this sort of thing done in a way that wasn't staggeringly annoying and frustrating.Nephtys wrote:protecting Ashley
Plus, you can just stash her in a dumpster or a closet for some of the tougher areas. She even crouches real low when you aim in her general direction to avoid blocking your line of fire, and dodges out of the way so you never get trapped in a door or something stupid. I have no problem with how RE4 seems to handle it.
Wait, a person you have to protect who doesn't get in your line of fire as much as possible? This I have to see to believe!
Does the game ever steal her in a cutscene or magically port her somewhere really dangerous? I notice above it doesn't seem the game has cutscenes... but I don't know anything about RE4. Or RE$ if you hold shift down too long.

I thought Ashlee would be hell of annoying to have to look after, but she's actually quite easy to babysit. When she's walking with you she doesn't dawdle, and when you're in full on killing time, she moves up closer and moves with you. The only time I have ever hit Ashlee was when I decided to, and deliberately attacked her with my ludicrously overpowered revolver.Stark wrote:Wait, a person you have to protect who doesn't get in your line of fire as much as possible? She also hides like a pro, so in some cases even when you have her, you don't have to worry about her at all.
While it doesn't do it magically, Ashlee changes hands so frequently it will make your head spin. It never really bothered me, simply because when she got kidnapped it usually resulted in seriously awesome stuff. Of course, there are seriously awesome sequences with Ashlee as well. As well as a sequence with Ashlee on her own.Does the game ever steal her in a cutscene or magically port her somewhere really dangerous? The only problem with Ashley is that she suffered from a serious case of Japanese fashion sense, dressed in something no American teenage girl in their right mind would actually wear.

She's occasionally babenapped during a cutscene and tied to something, but generally it just amounts to making the challenge "Shoot the zombies and blast off her restraints" rather than just "Shoot the zombies."Stark wrote:Wait, a person you have to protect who doesn't get in your line of fire as much as possible? There was one part where I felt sorry for the Ganados (zombies) where they needed to cart her off, but by that point I already had the more expensive sniper rifle and I was blasting giant holes in people as they stopped to pick her up. Anyone carrying Ashley moves around .5 miles per hour because she's actually a teenager, and these critters aren't able to sprint off with her. You're usually safe letting her squeal for a minute and popping the guy in the shins, so he falls down and drops her.
She's also, as mentioned, really good about dodging your aim. She avoids danger as much as possible and generally avoids any kind of problems. Even leading her through packs of Ganados is fine so long as you both keep moving. Being able to say "Get in here!" is pretty much the best thing ever, as dumping her into a box and coming back later saves you all the trouble in the world.
The best thing ever was if Leon gave her the knife, so she could stab things that pick her up. She's generally not a bother, the only problem is she makes some of the 'area effect' monsters harder in the scenes you need to escort her, as she's barely wearing anything and will be splattered pretty easily by someone with a catapult or a flail.

Plus once you beat the game you get a fun zombie blasting time attack mode. You kill zombies to get more time, so you can kill more zombies. And then the zombies start carrying flaming chainsaws and it's awesome.

Stark, the game has cutscenes. I think what was mentioned was it doesn't have FMV pre-rendered cutscenes that look 9000% better than normal gameplay (like the original RE Games, where Leon/Chris/Jill/Claire etc's hand is one polygon that looks like a cigarette pack with stripes on it).
It instead has in-game cutscenes like how MGS4 does it, but some at any time can require a button press (prompted on screen) to dodge like a swinging axe trap, or to mash x to escape from a giant rolling boulder.
Edit: That last picture hurts the brain.

This is true. The idol outfit she gets when you finish the game once is better, but stranger. And that suit of armour is just awesome (as is Leon's fancy suit).Spanky The Dolphin wrote:The only problem with Ashley is that she suffered from a serious case of Japanese fashion sense, dressed in something no American teenage girl in their right mind would actually wear.
You can do that? The best thing ever was if Leon gave her the knife, so she could stab things that pick her up.
The Mercenaries minigame is the shit. It is hell of awesome, and the other characters are shit-hot - Krauser and his Rambow, Wesker and his Punch of Get Right The Fuck Dead and HUNK, master of the chain neck breaker.Plus once you beat the game you get a fun zombie blasting time attack mode.
