The Darkness

Post by SylasGaunt »

So.. who's got it? Who's playing it? Who else is getting a kick out of taking out a gang of lowlifes by blast away at one with two-pistol mojo after impaling their car and using it as a shield from the rest? :D

It's got a few kinds (like Jackie's running speed), and a few instances where I've died because the demon arm power's targeting decided stabbing a dead corpse would be better than skewering the live guy blazing away at me with double SMGs but so far I've been having a helluva lotta fun doing terrible things to horrible people.

About the biggest annoyance I've had so far is that using the Creeping Dark power is reminding me why I so rarely played as a xenomorph on AVP.. I get disoriented as all hell skittering up walls and cielings and lose track of which way the ground is... on the other hand sneaking up and having this little snake thing lunge up, rip a guys throat out, and then eat his heart makes up for that I feel.

On hard, the opening of the game is *stupid*. I've blown through half the game in the time it took me to get the Darkness: facing eight headshot murderers with more hp than you and no autoaim = utter fail.

The Demon Arm is pretty random, as you say: sometimes it seems to prefer flailing at something out of range instead of killing the closer things.

Overall, I'll finish it (it's far less frustrating after you get the Darkness), but no way in hell am I keeping it. Nice engine, though. :)

I hear there are full-length television shows and films in the game.

There's half of 'To Kill A Mockingbird', which if you don't get your horrible skank girlfriend off your lap before she falls asleep you get to sit through. I... don't really understand why.

Because she hid the remote?

Overall the Darkness reminds me of one of those games that could have been truly stupendous if not for a few niggling, but significant things, one of which is the dodgy targeting priority on the demon arm (Though I admit I only really have problems with it when I've got a lot of things in close proximity such as in the bath-house. This is partially made up for by the sheer dramatic effect of the thing when it does work right, this big lightning fast tentacle darting out and spearing someone is a great image.. also fun when the SWAT guys with those big armored shields come after you and you rip the shield right out of their hand with it and shoot them in the face.

Not that the demon arm seems to be getting much use because the black hole power is just shy of being totally game-breaking in its over-poweredness. Find a good shadowed spot and you can damn near spam the thing. Fun way to take out flood lights though.

I... just said she falls asleep. I mean 'why did they do that to the player'. If your 360 goes into suspend, when it comes back there's nothing on the tv and you can't get up - EVER. I had to 'restart from checkpoint'.

You can spam almost everything if you shoot out lights, that's why the game goes from 'stunningly frustrating' to 'laughably easy'. The only difficulty I've had post-Darkness is FINDING MY MOTHERFUCKING WAY AROUND IN THE FUCKING FOG. :)

Glad I didn't let mine suspend then. I did watch a bit of the movie though and was able to get up just fine.

Yeah, after a while it stops flashing up 'press a to get up' and ... well... you can't. :)
