Fallout 3 Preview at Gamespot

Post by Vendetta »

Gamespot

Some stuff we already knew, some we didn't. Like being able to nuke one of the game's towns off the face of the map, permanently closing off all quests there, but giving access to a new set of quests later on.

Looks nifty. Going by what's said here it looks like you can play the game, for all intents and purposes, in the same style as the previous games, just with better graphics and some 1st person view points.

When I read 'Fat Boy, a portable nuclear bomb catapult', I knew we were on to a winner.

The character creation stuff they describe sounds pretty nifty too, like Liam Neeson's character's appearance changing based upon what you make your character look like.

Also, they're bringing back aimed shots and the bloody mess perk. That is awesome.

I just hope that FO3 comes out at least for the PC at the same time as the consoles as opposed to being released a year after the consoles.

They're probably saying that because the console bunch want it to be a bigger draw to buy their consoles and such. I too hope it comes out at a similar time. Oblivion certainly did fine, I don't know why we need to give Fallout the hackeneyed Halo treatment.

I for one can't wait to watch my character go from Liam Neeson's precious baby boy to drug addled pimp/serial killer.

It depends on whether there'll be prostitues- like most fans noted, Fallout 2 was nowhere near in the same league as Fallout when it came to feel. Fallout 2 was heavy handed and clumsy with its "grittyness" and it's overt pop culture references and continual breaking of the Fourth Wall.

The presence of prostitutes isn't really unlikely: games like Fable have already integrated prostitution and sex (gay sex, even) with no absurd uproar.

People have already made much of the lack of killable children, and so on. Honestly, those looking for an obsessive amount of violence really need to reconsider if they are defining the 'feel' of fallout by the atmosphere of the game or by the ability to shoot children and chat up hookers.

Not that there's anything wrong with thinking that killing kids and beddin' threelegged mutant hookers is a bad gameplay thing, as my old favorite Wasteland (which Fallout was a spiritual successor to) had those very elements in it, and it did in many ways define kind of the experience of it. But that was because everything else was kinda hard to make out.

Oh god! Look at that blasted wasteland!

Image

Actually, I have the Wasteland box art as my icon, just to prove I'm not BSing anyone. I love that game! But the more and more it goes from looking like that, to looking like the bethesda stuff we saw--with blasted hulks of cars, rubble, papers blowing in the breeze and so on, the less and less you need extra stuff--like shooting children and hookers--to prove just how hardcore you are. The visceral reaction those things provide is supplanted by the sheer obviousness that this is the ruin of humanity stretched out.

While I doubt we'll have seen the last of prostitution in Fallout, as lotsa' games have alluded to it or had it feature prominently enough, you might certainly see less of it on the consoles. I doubt the loss will be so dearly felt though. When I think of these games, I think about battling mutants, robots, and shooting people in the eyes. I hardly think back about a fiften pixel high prostitute.

Personally, that's what I loved the most about FO2: It knew it was being silly and wound up lampooning over-serious and 'hardcore' gaming. The mere presense of 50's style giant arachnids told me there would be no seriousness here.

Well that was a welcome addition, but I think Fallout went far enough - it was in no way serious, but Fallout 2 took that and went a bit too far away from Fallout's setting.

There are some other tidbits in the latest Major Nelson podcast as well, by the way.

The combat system is apparetly designed to minimise the impact of FPS skillz on the game, so don't expect to be using your combat skills as a dump stat :P

Also, the game will be on show at E3 this year, apparently it will only be the Xbox 360 version on display (the reason cited is that the development tools for the Xbox make it easy to produce the kind of demos and previews they wanted).
