Help: Dungeon Keeper on XP

I recently dusted off my old Dungeon Keeper Gold CD and installed it, though I have hit some technical problems.

1) The game has no sound during the actual game.
2) During the intro sequence and when actually playing a message pops up on my monitor saying "Signal out of range set monitor to 1024x768 60hz." This message looks like the box the buttons on the monitor bring up so I think it's a problem with the monitor.

I've tried using:
- Windows in built compatability function to emulate Win95 - caused game to crash before intro video
- Windows in built compatability function to get low res and graphics - no difference
- DosBox - Game wouldn't function as it's the Win95 version which apparently doesn't work in Dos.
- Installing the Direct3D patch - no change

Anyone have any ideas how to get it working on XP?

I snagged this tidbit from NT Compatible:
I run the Windows version (you have to go directly into the proper language directory i.e. D:\Keeper\WinSetup\English\SETUP.EXE. Autorun and menu based language selection doesn't work. DOS Version doesn't work either (and there wouldn't be sound anyway).

Also it sounds like the game is trying to run your monitor at a resolution (or refresh rate) your monitor does not support.

Thing is, my monitor is set to 1024x768 60 Hz :?

EDIT: Having just checked my monitor again what comes up is:

1024 x 768 V:60Hz H:48kHz

Is it the 'H:' value that's screwing up?

Sounds like Dungeon Keeper might be setting the resolution and/or refresh rate to something your monitor can't handle.

Poke around online and find the original DOS executable, and use DosBox or similar. Many of the Win95 'compatible' exe's of that vintage are utter shit. You shouldn't have any problems finding the older version, and it should give you less fancy bullshit problems.

Odd, I never had any problem running Dungeon Keeper on XP

Are your drivers all up to date? Sometimes that can be the problem.

That's why I suggested the older DOS one - I've had DK working on XP, but it was an original CD. I think they later released it with a win95 executable, like MoO2 etc, and that might be his problem.
