Soundcard(?) problems.

Okay, I have a problem with the my computer and its driving me nuts. The sound seems to be acting up.

Basic Windows sound seem to be gone. Sound for Flash games under browsers, Youtube, startup/shutdown sounds, mouseclicks, etc are all gone. On the other hand, games, Winamp and Media Player sounds are all working fine.

Dxdiag reports nothing wrong, and all my drivers are updated.

The little speaker icon next to the clock on the bottom right is also missing, even though I've enabled it under the Sound settings in the Control Panel.

Anyone have any ideas as to what could be wrong?

The Speaker icon for me disappears after a restart, until I go back in and re-enable it. I have no idea why it does this, but for a solution, I've just made a link to "Sounds and Audio Devices" from the control panel and put it in my quicklaunch. Then, whenever I restart, I click that, unselect "Place volume icon in the taskbar", hit apply, reselect it, and hit okay. That makes the icon reappear. Additionally from that box, you can click on "Advanced..." in the "Device volume" box to bring up the full volume controls.

From the "Volume Control" window you just opened, click on Options and make sure "Advanced Controls" has a check next to it, then open the "Properties" box and make sure that all your volume controls are checked in the little box at the bottom. Click OK.

Now, you want to make sure that the "Volume Control" and "Wave" bars aren't at the very bottom, and that neither of the Mute boxes are checked. I would also look at the Synth, Video, CD Volume, and Aux Volume. If any of those are muted or turned all the way down, try unmuting them or turning up the volume.

Hope this helps.
