WMP11, Vista and h.264

Under XP I used Zune player (WMP11 with knobs on) to share my media, including h.264s. Under Vista, using WMP11, however, it appears h.264s are not supported - it adds .avis it can't even play, but ignores .mp4s. Do I have to install the hateful, download-during-install-really-slowly Zune player? Why doesn't Media Centre like mp4s either?
