Since I've been giving away hardware lately ...

I know everybody wants wireless routers these days, but I have an old wired router that's sitting around collecting dust. If anybody wants to set up his own home LAN or just wants the added security of not directly connecting his PC to the Internet, let me know.

PS. It's a Linksys.

I also have two old routers that I am willing to place in new homes, at some point, if it is convenient...a Linksys BEFW-something Wireless B router that is kind of marginal (it periodically requires resetting, and has for awhile), and a really crappy DLink Dl-624, that works fine but has really pathetic range compared to the Linksys routers. If you're interested, PM me, but you'll need to ship me a postage-paid container with your address in it to send them to you in, as my philanthropy is limited to the hardware.

I'd actually be all over it if I weren't moving into another guy's already-networked house this fall.

I seem to be a huge minority in my preference for wired networks. I can't count the number of times I've had wireless networks die due to gremlins, humidity, dogs barking, or the phase of the moon. When you plug in a length of cat 5, it just works. There's no fiddling with settings. There's no worrying about a password, since you're not broadcasting every packet to the whole neighborhood. It just goes and you are all happy and networked.

Alas, I've already got my situation figured out. Hopefully someone else sees the wired light.

All of my machines are wired except for the laptops. Though unfortunately that leaves me w/ ethernet wires in plain sight, since I don't feel like spending the effort/money to get it properly installed...

Exactly the same situation here. I even have cables to connect to laptops at the two most common locations of use for when I want better transfer speeds. But otherwise its kinda annoying to have a mobile computer tethered by a network cable.

I've got wired everything except for my mother's computer downstairs. Hers is wirelessly connected partially because we didn't get around to drilling holes at the old house, and here at this house the walls are lath and plaster... which I have heard is a gigantic pain in the ass to try running wires through.
