Epic: "UT3 runs better today than Gears did last E3&quo

Post by Xisiqomelir »

Too funny Image

Video interview so no quotes, but here are the other highlights:
-Free mods definitely ("Dude, this is Unreal Tournament of course there will be and of course it's free!")
-Possible cross platform play with PC but it's still up in the air
-Possibility to create levels on the PS3 "eventually"
-The sky's the limit for user created mods/content, entirely new games can be created (de facto for Unreal)
-Sixaxis supposedly works very well for hoverboard control
-Mark/Epic excited about the open nature of PSN and future content

Is it still fine to piss off your devs with distribution microrapement shennanigans?

That was hilarious, though best quote was "Will there be after release content? Will it be free?"
"OF COURSE it will be free, THIS IS THE MOST SUPPORTED GAME IN THE HISTORY OF SUPPORTED GAMES."

Let no one blame Mark Rein for not being enthusiastic over his own game.

And it's not a suprise, the PS3 GPU is something alot more 'understandable' to Epic then the R500, it's alot more similar to what they're optimising for on the PC platform. Good to hear, though the latest videos make me want to upgrade.

Side note, the gamespot chatroom ROFLed when this interview happened, ah, E3 live

No no no I hear you have to charge monies for this sort of thing. It's an involiate law of nature.

Course, if I added up the cost of all the UT mods I'll probably buy on XBL, it's not even half the price difference to a PS3 which has absolutely nothing else going for it. But still, Microsoft *could* stop raping it's customers. ;)

*shrugs* They're both viable strategies. Obviously the fans love free content because, well, it's free. And it works for Epic, which is great. However, as I've stated in the past, just because it works for Epic doesn't mean it works for everyone. "Free" content costs money no matter how you slice it. How you pay for it is simple, they turn you into an advertising mouthpiece to sell more copies of the game.

Mods, of course, are generally user-created. Yes, I know, the game ships with mutators and they make new ones all the time, but the vast majority of cool mods for UT have been fan-made, and the only place fan-created mods get sold is Steam. ;)

Meanwhile, reports still indicate that the super-awesome PS3 Network isn't, well, awesome. Hopefully Epic will make it work like it should, but who knows. Cross-platform FPSes are still a joke, and a pretty bad one. Hell, Shadowrun gimped the PC players to make it work, remember.

I will say that XBL prices could definately come down, because frankly lots of them are just plain stupidly high.
