Computer Probems

Okay, I need some help with my computer. Last night a thunderstorm hit and knocked out the power for a few seconds, when the computer came back on and I tried to get to the desktop it just restarted, and it continues to do this every time I try to get to the desktop after signing in on my profile (It's an XP), so does anyone have some suggestions?

Suggestion no. 1 would be: Do not use a computer without a battery or UPS (that includes most desktops) during an electrical storm!!!
For that matter, even having a PC plugged into an outlet during an electrical storm can be dangerous, especially with no or low quality surge protectors.
It's possible your filesystem was corrupted, although I don't think that's the case given that the system apparently gets to the login screen (usually XP will interrupt the boot process if a filesystem is dirty). Also I might add that if you're using NTFS, and you most likely are, filesystem corruption isn't that likely.
What you might attempt to do is boot into safe mode (I believe you can get to the menu that lets you do this by pressing F8 during the boot sequence).
Failing that, you might wish to take your computer to a PC shop and have a desktop guy take a look at it.\[/b]

I see this type of problem all the time at work.
If you're lucky then it's not hardware that's gone, and from the sounds of it if it is only restarting when trying to log on then it shouldn't be. Try the Safe Mode as RThurmont suggests. If you can get into that/can boot from a utility CD/or can put the hard drive in another PC, then try a chkdsk /r on your hard drive, which may fix the problem.
If that doesn't work then best bet is to take it to a repair shop.
