Since my old, crappy one is dying as we speak, I finally decided to get one worthy to play Bioshock on.

I just helped my parents pick a TV and they went for the same model without the Ambilight. It's a pretty good TV, but be careful when you mount in on a wall brace, the SCART ports are right above the connection point and angled connectors won't fit well once it's on the wall.
But you'll probably use HDMI, so the point is pretty moot.

I'll probably leave it standing. I don't think I got room at the moment to nail it against the wall (well, I have but it will be somewhat behind a corner. I'll have to see when I got it)

How much did it cost you and how did you buy it? And were there other similar models that you considered? (I've been thinking about upgrading my TV for a while..)

Yes, went to different stores before I decided to go with Philips (they allways seemed to have the best colours when different models stood next to eachother). I found Sony rather expensive but Samsung had some nice models too. The ambilight was what eventually sold me tough, but I guess that's a feature you either like or don't.
Originally I wanted to go for a cheaper Philips 42pfl7432d (1600$ range iirc), but they weren't available in europe (or at least not in the Benelux anyway)
