Pokemon MMO

The pokemon basically screams MMO with you travelling around the map, fight 'wild' pokemon and other trainers.

Which brings us to one question, why isn't there a pokemon MMO, and why is there no one else that really suggested it to nintendo?

How would you design a pokemon MMO by the way?

It's because Pokemon is a franchise which targets 10 year olds.

Nintendo doesn't even let you chat to your opponents in Battle Revolution unless they're in your friends list, just to protect the little kids that might be playing online from sexual predators. Now, if Nintendo were to create an MMO, it would be almost forced to do the same to protect the little kids. Now, what fun is an MMO with the chat that severely limited?

MMO's belong on PC's, and Pokemon is a Nintendo franchise. Not even the 360 and PS3 have good MMO's. It might be fun to have a well-done Pokemon MMO, but it's not going to happen since the franchise will never, ever come to the computer and will always be console/handheld based.

This is still a good idea, even though I hate Pokemon. If the same company would make a more adult version complete with actual killing (say after a battle your monsters can devour your defeated opponent and his beaten pets) and you could have a hit game.

edit: spelling.

They could always just copy toontown online with its approved names and chat that is limited to clickable phrases.

That's idiotic; how would you ever get anywhere in the game if every time you lost a battle, your Pokemon were permanently lost? You'd have to win every single match, ever.

We're talking about an MMO here, remember?

Anyway, I think a Pokemon MMO would be amazing, but I don't think Nintendo can pull it off. They've never done an MMO before and they've already proven that they suck at running an online network.

What I'd really like to see though is a Pokemon MMO...on the DS. Now that would be cool. Take the existing Diamond/Pearl engine and adapt it to a new world and make it all online. Voice chat through the DS microphone or the headset you can buy in stores.

I'd basically design it like Diamond/Pearl, except with a much larger world and procedurally generated caverns and forests in some areas. Various missions that have things mixed up by changing placements, so you don't get the same thing twice. Multiple people can join up in parties (we've seen 2v2 battles on the DS, expand that to four perhaps) and you've got guys like Team Rocket/Galactic running around for villains. Or perhaps you can BE in the team.

Sadly, I agree with Praxis on the DS bit. While I do like the idea of violent monsters tearing each other apart on a field of battle, that's not Pokemanz. For those who have the luxury of disposable income and time enough to train, raise, breed, or whatever the hell you now do with pokeymanz, a DS will already be part of that arsensal, and the DS is also a great way of pokemanzing at each other--it's got a nice little wifi and bam! There you go. Maybe it would need to connect to the Wii, but let kids play it on their DS. No reason to make the WHOLE thing online, all the time. Offline safari mode, mayhaps?

Regardless, if you have to make a pokeymanz MMO and you don't want to do something ridiculous like actually try to replicate the hellish world of a realistic pokemon scenario (where rabid beasts prowl the land, waiting to be crammed into small balls and unleashed in torturous duels that would make Michael Vick squemish)... which is what I might like to do (say hello to Apokelypse Now: Uranium and Thorium editions!)... then you're really better of staying true to the medium.

I recommend using the Wii as a conenctor to the MMO, and using it's graphics processor to make the game more exciting... but honestly, thing is, now you're basically just playing a pokemon game online with the Wii... which is already in the pipes I belive. Some kind of Pokemon Stadium for the Wii, right?

The only advantage to the MMO aspect would be the ability to team up, but honestly, what the hell would that be? If you're teaming up, then isn't that already a violation of the duel nature of the game? At that point, why not just walk around with all 5 (6?) pokeballs popped, and massacre anything you see with massive gangbeatings from flaming apes and bidoofs.

I'm not sure there's any merit to that. Let alone the frustration of camping a spawn, waiting for some rareass pokemon to show up, only to have some jerkass with a giant screen-blocking Flying Whale pokemon come up and PK you while l33t speaking that you suck his whale-wang.

The only thing you can do in Pokemon with more than one person, properly, is fight. You can already fight online, versus folks, already. I think this has been covered.

Pokemon Battle Revolution is what you're thinking of, and it's well out of the pipes; it was released back in June.

I was hoping for a pokemon crystal and those kind of game, where you really explore the pokemon world, and the trainer that you fight is not just some stupid AI.

A more 'real' world feeling...where there is actual interaction...

The real question is, what source are you drawing from? If you want a sort of idealized brutal world where monsters battle each other, and it's not a children's hobby, you basically need a new game. If you use the gameworld as the basis for the MMO, it's pretty bland. The TV show? Wouldn't that make it even worse?

From what little I've seen of the pokeman show from the advertisements of the movies, it looks like a pokemon getting scraped or bruised is a moment of real sadness for the trainer--so I could hardly imagine them letting their pokieymanz go into a battle where the penalty for losing is being eaten alive. I know you weren't the one that suggested that, but I'm just throwing it out there.

For a more 'interactive' feel, you'd basically be wandering the countryside somewhat aimlessly as other trainers peered around, threw down, and then... wandered off again looking for pokemon. The other trainers wouldn't be mindless AI, but the results would be the same. Without any REAL reason to fight each other (you don't take eachother's pokemon after a duel) you'd have a few psychos challenging everyone, most everyone else ignoring them, and a few matches here or there.

I think you know what you'd like to play, but I don't think that's what Pokemon is about, by and large. It seems more like an interactive card game, where instead of buying cards, you play the game (IE, you get a 50 dollar booster set). It'd probably end up making money, but it'd be really, really bizzare. But anything with 'pokemon' seems to make money anyway.

Digimon? ^_^
I actually picked up Digimon World: Dawn & Dusk out of curiosity. If these games got better localisation and a bit more funding, they could kick the crap out of Pokemon for depth of play.

You'll find plenty of text-based forum RPG's out there with that kind of play, if you know the right places to look. Some of them (PASBL, ASB, etc) are just battling, with minimal RPG elements, while others (Evolutions on Bulbagarden, etc) are fairly heavy RP. Even there though, most of the violence is explained away by either Pokémon who are simply a product of their trainers (criminal organisations and the like), or who have somehow gone crazy from disease, famine, or whatever.
