iTunes Trouble

Good afternoon y'all. I have a problem with my computer. I recently wiped it and installed XP, and it won't let me install iTunes, or Quicktime.
When I first tried, it just wouldn't open the installer. I tried installing a friend's version of iTunes and the iPod software from 2003, and it all went well. Unfortunately, it still won't install iTunes 7, which I need for my iPod. It still does the same thing. Double click on the installer (which I have downloaded multiple times), and nothing starts up.
I understand it might be a system conflict, but I don't know of any way to find this out, or of fixing it.
P.S. This is making me love Linux more and more, if only for the ease of troubleshooting...
