This Cold (HD) War Just Got Hot

Microsoft to give away 5 HD-DVD titles with every new purchase of the HD add-on peripheral to the Xbox 360.

Wonder how much longer Sony will keep harping on about that lead they have with Blu-ray.

Nevermind that HD-DVD players go for like $200-250 at Circuit City, while BD-ROM is $500 or so.

The only reason BDROM has a lead is because sony made it part of the PS3.

I'm going to say that this brings the weeklies from 70/30 to 65/35 at most, for at most 3 weeks.

I was thinking about getting the HD-DVD gizmo for Christmas anyway; as soon as I know that the titles on offer aren't ones that are crap/that I already own, I'm in!

Which, given the PS3's massive success, makes this even more dire for MS then, really. BD-ROM is a good one to back because of data density, so if one has to die, it needs to be HD-DVD so we don't get a half step forward, but a whole one. Though I still doubt this whole HD format war will end with a real victor like Beta vs. VHS. And in that case, the inferior VHS won instead.

Ditto; I have to buy a 360 anyway to play Ace Combat 6 and GTA4.

Hopefully Toshiba will get those tri-layer discs into production next year.

Don't forget in the whole hi-def war that HD-DVD's at least can be played on DVD players too. (they're double-sided :))

Only the specifically-made HD-DVD Combo format discs can, and there appears to be a real quality control issue with those.

I thought, given dual sided discs were the first kind before DVD9, that this wouldn't be an issue. Have one side Blu-ray, one side HD-DVD. Voila, end of format war nonsense.

Both will be available on PS3.

GTA4 will be. Ace Combat 6 not so much.

It's supposed to come out for it at some point according to IGN.

While it's been up and down, the cheaper format has always been the winner in the past, so I don't like BD's long term prospects. I can't see BD surviving long when HD-DVD players are $99 and BD players are still $200 or more.

Except that both HDDVD's and BD's cost the same amount of money. And this hasn't even entered the stage where people who aren't willing to spend $500 for bleeding edge technology are purchasing the players in any great numbers.

I don't think there will be a clear winner unless one side throws in the towel. What's going to happen is we'll start seeing hybrid players.

Namco haven't ruled it out, but they apparently aren't currently working on a PS3 version.

I'd expect AC7 to be multiplatform, unless the PS3 is looking like even more of a bad bet by then, but AC6 not so much.

Even if AC6 does eventually come out for the PS3, I can get them both considerably cheaper (and for the later, sooner) on a 360, and the PS3 has no exclusives that I actually want (fortunately the next Soul Calibur game is multiplatform as well). OTOH I may have to get a Wii just for the new Mario Kart game, if I am to maintain my current status as party play champion. :)

All new HD console games are $59.99, unless you mean you don't even have the hardware yet. Even then, it's not like every 360 SKU is cheaper than every PS3 SKU.

Let me guess, you're from the Sony Defense Force?

I post at the same board as Razoric and m0dus, if that counts.

Did you even read the message you quoted? The one that says "I still have to buy a 360"?

Also, not all new games are the same price here. For example, Conan is £40 on the Xbox but £45 on the PS3. And, for the kicker, Amazon.co.uk is selling the Xbox 360 Elite for 1p cheaper than the 40 GB PS3.

How very odd. Ignorantia juris non excusat, sorry for the misinformation.
